So, the whole discussion that's going on over on this thread about films not really needing to be bonafide classics to be Film of the Week material has inspired me to create this thread. More along the films that are just downright enjoyable, there's quite a few that I absolutely love.

Demolition Man being one of them.

It's a Sci-Fi action film, but as far as such films go, I felt it was extreme original in the sense that the future doesn't turn out to be a dystopian nightmare or post-apocalyptic wasteland, but rather a really peacefull place. So, I won't bother with the plot, it's a fairly basic premise that sets up a situation where two arch enemies do battle.

But quite honestly, this is an excellent film in my opinion, it's got some good sci-fi concepts, great action and humour. It's a film I just really enjoy watching.

    Thoughts?

I'd agree. It not one of those films that gets talked about a lot but when you see it on the tv you just have to watch it and have a damn entertaining time whilst you do.

Psychologically rewiring hardened criminals brains so they enjoy knitting, shells instead of toilet paper, Rob Schneider, explosions. Whats not to love?

Well, Rob Schneider, but he only had a small part, so it's ok.

it is a great, no-brainer movie. The only regret i have is that we didn't see bullock with her kit off!

I agree that theres a time & a place for watching deep & meaningful arty movies, but sometimes you just want to switch off & enjoy the ride, so sticking on something like Demolition Man or Total Recall hits the spot every time!!!

I'm going to have 3 shells put in all toliets in my new house and laugh when people ask me what they are for.

Will always hold a place in my heart as its the first 15s movie I saw in the cinema. It was for my, naturally enough, 15th birthday and it's got a few memories attached.

And the shells thing? Just genius.

Great premise for a film well executed, really quotable too. "What is your boggle John Spartan?".

I find this movie really enjoyable. Some decent action scenes and good humour.

One question though: How the hell do you use those three shells?

I've got a few fond memories of my first time watching it too. It was an odd time, I was about 12 or 13, and my parents must have thought that I was watching too many violent movies and tried to clamp down, because when I rented it out, they wouldn't let me watch it. Of course, I wasn't having any of this hipocrisy, and demanded to know why this one wasn't allowed when I've seen loads of 15s and 18s films and the likes already? So I had to kinda sneek a look at it when my parents weren't looking, of course I was caught and that caused a big tiff.

I think they must've thought it wasn't worth the bother, and never cared less what I was watching again after that. ;)

It's a class film alright, "What's your boggle?" - brilliant. It was a just a bit different and it helped that sandra bullock was lookin fiesty in it.

    other memorable quotes
John Spartan: [to machine on wall after finding out that they no longer use toilet paper] Thanks a lot you ****-brained, ****-faced, ball breaking, duck ****ing pain in the ass.
Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined five credits for repeated violations of the verbal morality statute.
John Spartan: [grabbing the tickets] So much for the seashells. See you in a few minutes.

    From the muscle-man himself:

    Q) How do you use the 3 seashells?!
    A) OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry.

    From Ain't it cool news.

Ah yeah its a classic alright. Its just so over the top it's good. Casting Dennis leary as a guy called Edgar Friendly - genius.

Good movie it was what it was never pretended to be anything other than a good action movie, Snipes and Stallone were great together for some reason? Wesley carried the movie. He was brilliant as the bad guy.

An excellent premise pulled of by the perfect actors, actually maybe Dolph Lundgren as the bad guy would have been better?

Dolph Lungren? No way, Arnie would have been better only because of the anymosity between Stallone and Arnie. Snipes was the man.

The Running Man is another one in this vein I think. Vintage Arnie with some great one-liners and way over the top action :p
Ben Richards (about to be sent into the game zone): "Killian!.. I'll be back!"
Damon Killian (slight pause, leans in closer): "Only in a rerun!"
    Classic :D
