Question for MAC users

Maybe this should be in the MAC forum but I thought the photographers would go easy on me with such a Noob question :)

I'm thinking of buying a new computer and might go for a Macbook.
The easiest place for me have a look at a Mac is in PC World, last time I was there none of the staff seemed to have a clue about them(no more than myself to be fair)
If I put some of my favourite pics on a USB stick how do I open it on a Mac to have a look at them ? (I have never used a Mac)

    TIA

First off PC World staff dont have a clue about Macs, you will be wasting your time. Best bet go to GalMac (just cos I see Orananmore on your profile there) or some place and ask all the questions you want, even if you dont end up buying there.

Secondly, a usb key will mount on a mac just as it would on windows as an external drive, which you can open and access the files as you would on a windows machine. The only difference might be the software you use to view these files. The default will be an application called 'Preview' which opens everything from images to pdfs (its great!!!)

So specifically, a new icon will appear on the Mac DESKTOP (not like going into My Computer to find the ext drive). The drive will have whatever name the USB device has. You simply dbl-click to open the folder/drive and work away from there. dbl-click to open the file, or ctrl click on the icon for a menu of options (eqv to second mouse button on windows)

    Any other questions?

    GO APPLE :)

As I'm tired of pointing out, you can install Windows on it via Bootcamp, or run it via Parallels. :|

I did that a few days after I got my macbook pro. I think I've booted into windows once in total since I installed bootcamp (about 2 months ago).

Roen, you'll grow to love it. I can barely bring myself to use my desktop pc now at home because it's so slow in comparison.

agree with all the above, I made a switch to MAC in Sep last and what a difference. your going to love it.

What really annoys me about my work PC now is the sleep feature. With the mac, when you wake it up out of sleep it's ready to use in abour 3 seconds (if that). With my work PC, I think 2 times out of 5, I have to hit the power button after waiting 3+ minutes for it to wake up, the other 3 times it takes between 1 and 2 minutes before it's usable. uggh

I made the switch a couple of years ago but still use a XP notebook for work. What a difference. The XP notebook can be so frustrating sometimes. If you are in Galway there is a Apple reseller store downstairs in the corbett court shopping centre (just off eyre square) that you can spend some time playing with them and trying out different things.
I can't recommend macs highly enough. I am actually thinking about upgrading later this year to either a macbook or imac

@ CrowdedHouse - why not go to the Apple shop in Galway since it has opened now.

@ Fenster - Mark, go slowly unlike you did that night at my place so that other "not as fast users" can understand what the hell you were waffling on about!!

i'd nearly not buy a mac purely because of those awful ads apple have running at the moment.
