Round the world ticket query

Hopefully someone can give me some info on this:

I am currently looking at the different round the world tickets and "nearly" round the world tickets, that is the flights that will get you to Oz/NZ via say South East Asia, then back a different route.

It seems that for all of these different tickets, you must be back at your point of origin within one year of leaving.

My plan is to travel for about 4/5 months, then get to Oz. Ideally I would like to stay in Oz for at least 9 months before spending another few months travelling home. However, if i was to buy a round the world ticket, I would need to drastically reduce the amount of time spent in different places to keep to the 'one year' rule.

My question: Is there any way around this condition?
At the moment it seems that my only option would be to book the tickets, then not use the last leg of it and book a seperate ticket to get home when I am ready, which could be quite expensive.

If I book a RTW ticket can I reschedule the final legs of my travel while I am on the road?
Has anyone stayed longer away than they had originally planned? If so what did you do?

    Thanks.

I think that this might be a limitation of the booking systems that the airlines use. I have never seen a ticket that will cover more than a 12 month period so I think you'd have to buy more than one ticket to do what you want.

It depends on the ticket you get as some are more flexible than others. I used a One World Explorer ticket which let me change the flight dates whenever I wanted, or change the whole route for a 75 euro fee. I stayed a little bit longer than planned but it was still within the 1 year validity of the ticket.

AFAIK there isn't anyway to really stretch these tickets the way you want to :/

yeah, thats what I thought. I'll probably have to book 2 sets of tickets so. If anyone knows any way around this, please do let me know!! :)

I would have thought it was a common enough situation though. i.e. people in Oz extending their Visa's for a year by working on a farm or whatever.
