why hammer the bail with your bat?

    I noticed that every once in a while chandarpaul (the batsman) would take one of the bails off the stumps and (apparently) hammer it into the ground with his bat, and then replace it.
    Anyone know why he was doing this?

    Not necessarily the centre stump. It's his way of taking guard. Most batsmen use their studs to mark their guard on the crease but Chanderpaul uses the bail. Sarwan also does it. Must be a Guyana thing.

    More to do with the fact that the pitches there are *really* hard, and scraping with your boot or your bat will not make any impression on the pitch, so you have to hammer in the bail to leave a mark. Unless pitches in Ireland, where breathing on them usually does the trick...

    The batmans' guard allows him to know where he's standing in relation to the stumps, ensuring he's covering the "number" he asked for.

    I've always asked the umpire for 'middle' or 'middle & leg'. How does using a number work?

    1 = Leg stump
    2 = Middle & Leg
    3 = middle ........etc

    The first time I heard this I wondered what the hell the batsman was talking about.

    Exactly - unless you're an aussie, some of them ask for 2 centres, meaning on a line from centre stump at either end.

    TBH, a lot of batsmen don't really use the guard mark properly - I know several who ask for middle, then stand on it, covering off, and wonder why they're LBW to the first straight ball they miss!
