Sky News V Kidnapped British Soldiers

    Hi all,

This is my first post so please be gentle with me!

Just watching Sky News and I cant believe the coverage they keep giving to this cricket murder of Bob Woolmer.

It has been headline news on Sky for the past week, despite other news headlines such as the celebrations of the EU, Northern Ireland, and what I feel to be a major news story the Kidnapped British Soldiers by Iran. This news I beleive is of major importance as it could be te fuse to start a new war with Iran and the west.

But SKY News keep on headlining the cricket story. Whilst I appreciate the sad loss of Bob Woomer I cant beleive that this can be the only headline News for the week!

I know they have a weird sense of priorities who knows maybe Rupert murdoch was a cricket fan and friend of Bob and he's sent word down from on high that this is the only story in town.

    Its called ratings.

Just like baby polar bears get higher ratings than some complicated blurb about some EU constitutional blah. In the US, there was 24 hour wall-to-wall coverage of Anna Nicole Smith's death.

If the young polar bear ate Madonnas baby while she was visiting old Trafford, Sky News would just explode.

On a side note, I garuntee if some Iranian sailors vered into 'Iraqi' waters they would be branded suspicious terrorist types bent on some kind of dastardly evil. The Iranians will be careful with this, because they know, in the bigger picture, that the US is desperate to provoke an incident.

Might be a good Idea not to inflame Public opinion in the UK till the 15 are released. Might lead to attacks on Mosques Etc

Northern Ireland , well there is nothing new here really more politics that no-one understands the logic in

50 years of the EU , not of great man on the street importance.

The cricket story is a big one ,

so true, would only be bested if her baby ate the polar bear :D

reckon the N.Ireland thing will get good coverage today considering paisley and adams are actually talking to each other now and it looks like the institutions will be up and running by may 8th

i know its bad but i honestly thought it'd never happen.

as to the iranian thing theres more to be seen there. just cause some navy guy says they wernt in iranian waters doesnt mean they werent. persoanlly i think theres a bit of brinkmanship going on here. i dont get a sense that it'd lead to an invasion so i reckon a deal will be done to get em back which secures iran against american agression. wouldnt be the first time

I think all that will happen is the Yanks let go some Iranian agents who they apprehended on the Iran/Iraq border some time back and Tehran will let the British go free.

Good quip about Sky News. :)

    Mike.

No cameras = no news. Thats in effect is whats happening with the British sailors.

Bob Woolmer's is a huge story in sport. It's the first time I can remember any coach being killed.

As for the polar bear and Madonnas baby... POTM! :D

The word 'kidnapped' would be replaced with 'arrested', too. Also, it is ironic British occupation troops guarding obstensibly "Iraqi" oil facilities making such a hoopla about a simple peaceful border dispute. I think neither side wants to really escalate this further so they'll be released soon enough.

It's a very significant development. You'd have thought there'd be a lot, not necessarily wall-to-wall, but quite a bit of coverage. And so I switched on Sky News at 4:45 yesterday and pressed red. The top story was Anna Nicole Smith, with no fewer than two screens devoted to the "news".

Shows where Sky News have their priorities really. News Channel of the Year? What were the RTS thinking??

The people get what the people want. Go over to BBC News Online, they have their top 5 stories listed. At times the listing can baffle the mind. That's not a media decision, that's a viewer decision.

Well, lets face it, sky news is the "showbiz news" anyway, usually short on substance, long on rhetoric and nationalism.
I do see a fair amount of rightful indignation about the Iranian video. The one showing the captives alive and being treated well.
Of course, we have a snap denial they were in Iranian waters, and well as long as you get the denial out early and often (thank you sky news) it doesn't matter whether it's true or not.
I do see this capture turning into a perverse Big Brother, the girl they show smoking all the time really reminds me of Jo O Meara, ehhh, smoking all the time. I wonder did She put on the headscarf for her appearance on iranian TV for a pack of smokes or was she heavily encouraged? It seems they didn't really respect her culture there....

what a distastefull and obnoxious post
you compare the plight of a female soldier who must be terrified to a contestant on a low brown reality tv show
oh and anyone with an ounce of sense knows that the female soldier was coerced into appearing on tv , writting that tacky letter and calling for the withdrawl of troops from iraq
how anyone could defend the iranian goverments actions is beyond me

as for the comments on sky news devoting too much time to the bob woolemer murder , its a brittish news chanell and bob woolmer is brittish
anyway i watched sky news this past week and they devoted any amount of time to the northern ireland peace process
