on a wedding thread last week it was generally agreed that this is old and cliched, and I agreed myself, but I think this works quite well...what do you think? It reminded me of 'It' as it was quite close to a storm drain...

I think the look is quite striking and used in moderation can be quite effective. On a related note, anyone have a link to a "how-to" article to achive this effect?

I used Lightroom to desaturate all colours except blue...I wouldn't know how to do it in PS...

If I remember correctly, there's two tutorials of how to do it in PS in the DD?

I actually think it works quite well in the shot, though it really needs a square crop - The bottom adds nothing to the image!

a simple way of doing it is to simply, duplicate the image, leave the colour copy under the B&W and simply erase out what you want to be colour...
Not the best way ,but handy if you want to do a simply job

New adjustment layer using channell mixer, change to monochrome the use brush to paint colour back in.

Like all visual effects it becomes a cliché if overdone but used sparingly it's very effective. (Thinking particularly of Schindler's List.) I like the effect here - selective blue makes a nice change from the usual red.

Thanks all. Will look at doing a square crop...

I was thinking Schlindlers List too...

I make a layer mask, desaturate and then black-colour in the bits I want coloured with the paint brush tool.

you could make a duplicate layer desaturate and then use an appropriate size history brush to colour back in any area you wish.
But yes it is a bit so last year.
Another effect that suits some shots is to select and reduce the saturation on parts of a photograph but still maintain the colour.
