Hi there everyone, just wondering if anyone here had used or heard of Salt Recording studio before? It looks like we're gonna go in there for a bit of recording in the next few weeks, it seems fairly reasonable.

If anyone's used it or heard anything about it, please advise!

They have a sort of summer camp thing, Salt Rockschool, two weeks in the studio, with the objective of forming bands and writing and recording songs. I went to it the past three years. Great place, owned by Frank Kearns (Of Cactus World News fame), he's bang on, really knows his stuff, always willing to help, has an encyclopaedic knowledge of whatever you'd want to know.

I don't have any experience in other studios to compare it to, but it seems pretty well equipped, there was nothing we wanted to do that we couldn't do. Definately recommend it.

that place is right beside me! I never thought of going there. Is it an expensive? how much would it cost to record a 4 track ep for example over a couple of days?

You pay per day, don't know the cost... So it depends on how prepared you are, how fast you can get everything done. Don't forget the time for mixing and mastering, either.

Neo#, I was talking to someone in the studio; they said that most bands would use 3-4 days in there to do an EP of about 4 songs that would be good enough for the radio. I don't know if he was talking it up or not but three or four days sounds about right for that kind of thing, at least for an amateur band. I'm not sure of the prices though.

I've done the rockschool a few times and i can't fault it at all, one of the best things I've done! Learned loads about music, song writing and it's great for starting off recording experience.

In relation to the actual recording sessions there, i do assisting engineering there most weekends, the price depends on how long you're going to need, he charges per day. But it's a great professional recording, plenty of work gets done and the atmosphere is great, I've watched many a happy client walk out at the end of the day! =]

If you want prices or need to enquire about anything just contact Frank Kearns and he'll be happy to talk to you =]

You should be able to block off a week in most studios these days for a decent price. I'd usually suggest a week straight out for a 4 song ep. 7 days straight.

Salt is open a long time now and it's been a while since I been there, 11 years actually!!! Jesus Christ!!!! I did quite a bit of work out there back then. It wasn't too shabby then so I'm sure it has improved since.

Frank Kearns is a top man too and always ready to lend a hand.

Salt is a good customer of ours - Top Men !

I'd agree with the Rat about the amount of time - a day a song isn't really enough in my opinion.

dunno if you really need that long to record a 4 track CD if you're fully practiced and prepared. I was in Salt about 4 months ago and tracks all the drums bass and guitars for a 4 track thing in 1 day. then did vox, piano, cello and trumpets in my home studio. 2 days mixing. still needs to be mastered...
