Hope their external hard drives are more durable than their internal!

Have had to replace 2 internal hard-drives in the last few months (on girlfriend's and brother's computers) - both were Maxtor.

Flatmate got an external Maxtor HD a few months ago. We both put some data on it, then it crackled, fizzled, and died. All our data was lost. Not in my recommended list.

Maxtor suck big time! Lost all my data on more than one occasion. I think Dell stopped using them.

I prefer this. Have one already, may get another... ;)

It must be the season for hdd deals.

500gb for €155 here, cheapest shipping is €12.

Was gonna buy two of those in work, but think I'll recommend three of the Aldi ones instead. Roughly the same money and total capacity ('tho the Medion drives are a lot slimmer), easier return and a three-year warranty instead of 12-month-and-post-it-back-to-the-Netherlands job.

Also, I'd rather backup data spread across a few smaller drives than one big one, in case of a worst-case total data loss.

In defense of Maxtor I've had one ticking away for 6 years without any trouble.

Thats impressive... that must have been a manufacturing flaw :D

Seriously, i rarely replace a non maxtor hard drive and i have replaced hundreds in my time.

I don't use them much but from what I have used I don't really have any problem with Maxtor....although....I've never had any problems with Q-Tec either....so maybe I'm just lucky :D

Harvey Norman are doing 500GB ioMega drives for €195.

Search the internet and you'll find that different brands get slated/praised by different places.

I think Western Digital seemed to have the worst reputation for faulty drives on a number of sites I was looking at before buying my latest hard drive.

Maxtor were acquired by Seagate last year anyway.

As do I. Although, every subsequent drive I've bought has been from different manufacturers (mainly WD).
