I don't, but you really are better off going to the GP first.

I understand that it is pretty mush a waste of time going to a GP re: skin problems because its an area GPs are generally weak in. However you should go to a GP first, at least they will reccomend a good one, I think any dermatologist who takes people without a refferal is probably not very busy and therefor more than likely not any good. My local GP trained as a dermatologists but became a GP and I have heard of a few more. Get a list of doctors in your area and check their creditionals, at least than the visit to the GP will not be wasted, and they may even be able to help you minus the cost of a dermotologist

definitely go to the gp first you could get lucky and they will prescribe you the right thingsthere and then which will save you money............

without a referall im pretty sure you would have to go private whichis more expensive

just checked my prescription from a while back but it dosnt have the docs name on the medicine label so all i can advise is go to the gp

I attended a good dermatologist in the Mater Private a few years back, PM me if you want his name. AFAIK no consultant will take you on as a patient without a letter from your GP.

I need to go to a dermatologist but am a bit broke at the moment...how much does it cost to go to one, is it the same as the doctor. Can they prescribe medication or do they just change your diet...?

Try ringing your GP and ask about being referred to a dermatologist. Maybe they'll give you a name that way?

    elaine_d18:

Dermatologist fees could be in the region of €150-€200.

I'd be very suprised if any Dermatologist altered your diet. A link between diet and acne has never been shown. I don't believe there is a proven link between diet and many other common skin issues either (could be wrong).

People go to Dermatologists for the same reason they go to any specialists - they know more about the condition than a GP does. They may also be the only source of some treatments (Roaccutane springs to mind).

I once needed to go - it was at my doctor's suggestion, not my request.

Once I got the referral, St. James's Hospital gave me an appointment in about 8 weeks. No charge. Worked out fine.

Thank you for your shill contribution. However, your 'doctor' is in California, the patient is in Ireland.

    There's one here: http://www.medicus.ie/en/index.php.

As per the original question on this thread - you do not need a GP referral to see this Dermatoligist.

Costs around 70 euro. You can prob get money back from the VHI for seeing a specialist.
They're all the same - they take a skin sample and test it to verify if/what allergies/fungus etc you have before diagnosis.

The going through GP route is just another problem with this countries health care system. The taxpayer paying 60 euro to go through a GP when they know the specialist they need, is just a waste of money. It's not like that on the continent (well in Spain anyway). Same goes for antibiotics. The policy makers are in the millionaire GP's back pocket

    Best of luck.

Theres an excellent dermatologist in Beaumont Hospital called Dr Gillian Murphy. She's quite well known for her work in that area.

Does anyone know of any other dermatologists in Dublin?

I've only been living here since September and don't have a GP.

You will normally have to go to a GP first. That way your situation can be prioritised.

You won't be able to see a dermatologist without a GP referring you. That's the way the system works here.
When you do get a GP's referral letter you will have to decide whether to go public or private.
If you opt for public you could be waiting up to a year depending on which dermatologist you want to see. There are two in Beaumont and Vincents, James too.
Or if you go private you will be seen in a week or two. Private means paying about €150.
Your treatment will depend on the condition.

    Hi,

I have just been to my GP and also need to see a dermatologist, he mentioned that he would make an appointment for me for some place on Baggot street. He said I will get an appointment sent to me in the post in 5 weeks or so, and gave me a letter from my doc to give to the dermatologist.

Now he didn't ask me if I wanted to go public or private but he knows me well and was asking about my business and I told him money was very tight at the moment, so I'm guessing its not private, so does this mean there will be no fees involved?

    Thanks

Possibly Baggot Street Community Hospital, its on Upper Baggot Street, quite close to the canal. They do some out-patient stuff, but I have no idea if they do dermatology.

You might phone the hospital and ask is there a dermatology clinic or just phone you GP's receptionist and ask where you are being referred to, just say you didn't quite catch the name.

Sorry for not getting back sooner, don't check this thing a lot. We didn't actually see the dermatologist there - we were going to bring our kid but we brought him to someone in Spain instead in the end.

We've gone to pediatricians in there and in another place though and they were just as good as any where else.

I'd say if you're just looking for them to take a sample for a lab to diagnose something then it might be the cheapest option.
