Not sure if this is the right place for this rant but.....Has anyone noticed the amount of plastic drinks bottles discarded on the roadside recently?

We are just back from a circa 2 mile walk. I counted 126 plastic bottles obviously just thrown out of cars. We live in a rural area and the problem just seems to be getting worse and worse. Does anyone reading this actually do this?

Is there anything that can be done about this? I ring the council when someone fly tips on our road but can you just ring them and say there are 126 bottles of a 2 mile stretch. Would they do anything about it or do they care???

Sadly all to common, I live in Meath, where our roadsides have regular cascades of bottles, cups, crips packs etc. It's usually worse if you live like I do on the first straight section of road (easy to take your hands off the wheel and wind down the wind) from a petrol station 1.5 miles away, which is about how long it takes to down a bottle of Lucazade!!

Only thing to do I suppose is vote green in the election. From their website:

"Introduce a refundable deposit system on recyclable/refillable containers (plastic bottles, aluminium cans etc) and a levy on container/packaging that cannot be recycled. Set up a Working Group to explore the option of a the gradual introduction of ‘plastic tax’ on products and packaging containing plastic, given the successful implementation of a tax on plastic bags in this country."

Maybe people would be more reluctant to dump if they knew each bottle was worth 15c ??

Hopefully they will get into power and implement that.

Yes, I've seen this at work in other countries, notably in North America. In urban areas, it can have a negative impact by encouraging those less fortunate to scour public waste bins for plastic bottles, making a bit of a mess and dragging large black bags around with them.

Further to your first post, it's worth checking with your local councils Environment Officer about grant funding for local projects. I was able to get a modest Local Agenda 21 grant for a roadside clean up and there are other schemes aimed at cleaning up and improving local areas, such as pathways, parks etc. It helps, though you still have to get your hands dirty!
