Lidl Lawnmower

Saw that myself in one of their flyers and cringed , there are things that lidl are for and frankly that it isnt for. The simple fact of the matter is that you will get what you pay for. If you only have a small lawn then perhaps this may be for you but if you have slightly larger lawn then you need a solid investment. We have a 17 year old honda of the same type as that one that still starts every time on first pull after even the first time out after a full winter of storage.

Basically , small garden why not but anything substantial would require an investment in a solid machine ie Honda (you could even buy a second hand honda for that money and still get more and there is no shortage of parts and repairers for them because of their market share)

Sorry I have no actual experience on that particular machine but thats my two cents anyhoo.

Buying tools is one area where I believe you get what you pay for.

The cutting width is only about 18" which is narrow enough. Can't determine what engine is fitted, what type of deck, whether the wheels have bearings, etc.

Anyway, the powertools that I have seen coming from Aldi and Lidl are just cheap sh!te that you can't get parts for, and will just about last the one season if your lucky.

My advice would be to go to a reputable tool hire / sales shop, haggle like your life depended on it. At least you'll get better stuff, a warranty and parts when you need them.

It has a Briggs & Stratton engine.

is that how much a petrol lawnmower costs these days for a cheap one?

I hope mine lasts a few more years then. I bought a Tecumseh unit 10ys ago and still works every year, no problem.

B&S engine should be good one also. Depends really on your lawn.

I bought mine for 3 reasons and they were the criteria I was looking for
    1. Tecumseh engine
    2. Aluminum body
    3. Hard Plastic collection box

The engine could have been a B&S but the other 2 were crucial

If you look closely at the brochure, you can see the logo on top of the engine.

I think there's a little bit of snobbery going on here regarding Lidl. I was sceptical myself till Dad bought stuff there years ago and it's still going!

For that price you just can't go wrong and you will certianly get the worth out of it. I got a chain saw and hedge strimmer from Aldi in the last few weeks and total cost was 220 yoyo's, both have been used alot and so far so good. Why pay huge money for brand names when, as we all know and have experienced, they can let you down just as quick.

Get it, cut your grass, and never mind the begrudgers!

in all fairness its a push along mower. ie an engine, which is briggs and stratton so your good, blade (not much to mess up here really) a deck and some wheels.

i'd reccomend only buying a mower with an alloy deck too but theres loadsa steel ones on the market and this one probably compares favourably to them.

agree with fatchance on pretty much everything bar the cordless stuff they both sell, which from experience sucks.

how goes the saw, i've not had a chance to use it yet, feels heavy

Well my BIL bought the saw. It worked fine .... for a while. Then something happened the chain. He can't get a chain to fit so no saw.

Not as heavy as my old Stihl saw which is a brute. It's great so long as you keep oil well full, blade sharp and tension right, same as any saw. It's great so far. Don't find it too heavy but have'nt had it in my paw for a long period yet.

Agree about their cordless stuff, just can't match the brand names in that department. Anything electrical or petrol works well.

As above: The chain will fit but you'll need to release the chain guide bolts, fit the chain and then tighten them back up agin getting the tension right. When you pull the chain away from the guide from above you should be able to see the chain appear above the guide in one spot only i.e. where you have it held

I do a lot of woodwork projects that require millions of holes in wood ..... countersink same holes and finally screwing a similar qty of screws (typically every size from (3 x 12) to (5 x50) .... (and literally every size within this range) .....

when the first LIDL 18v cordless cordless drivers came out I bought one ...... the next time they were on offer I bought two more ..... over the years I bought a couple more so now I have 5 (with 5 chargers and 10 batteries) .... I have them set up typically with a couple of drill bits/countersink/no.1 and 2 posidrive bits ....

And do you know what? .....

Every one of them is still working perfectly for me .... :p

If you a have a small enough lawn, and were thinking of buying one, its a bargain. 3 year gaurantee. if the arse falls off it in 2 years time, drop it back.
you wont get that wiht anyone else. If you have a small lawn and want something cheap, then people buy eletric as well. But this will do the business.

All gone when I went to buy! asked the guy and he said they sold out in an hour, said they had 60 in. C'est La Vie

Probably just as well, have a biggish garden.

    Thanks again

If you really want something that is going to be popular you need to be in the que 15 minutes (or even 30 minutes) before they open ....

If you do buy a cheap steel deck mower, one tip is to paint the underside of the deck with Hammerite smooth (or similar) before it is used first and it should last for years....

I was lucky to get one. Its plenty good for a medium sized lawn. Good strong motor on it. and the deck is amde from a hard plastic resin. Looks like if its minded it will last. Take the advice of the last poster, if u end up buying a steel deck, then hammerite it a few coats under neath, before u even start it.

Good idea about the hammerite domore and thanks tred for reminding me, completely forgot hammerite.

Mr Loopymum bought 7hp in homebase last thurday, already 10% off with another 10% off that day, it worked out at around €488.
Mulching and sideout, great spec but steel body and weighs 47kg but he is besotted.

must tell him about the hammerite though.

Best part of it though is that we were buying other stuff and once you spend over €800 you can get interest free credit for a year. applied and got it, grand once you pay it off in full before the year is out
