    Seeded teams through

    Australia (A1)
    South Africa (A2)
    Sri Lanka (B1)
    New Zealand (C1)
    England (C2)
    West Indies (D2)

    Party crashers through

    Bangladesh (B2) (well almost certainly)
    Ireland (D1)

Top two from each group progress to Super 8 phase.

    Schedule from bbc

Super Eight (all start 1430 BST)

    MARCH
    27 West Indies (D2) v Australia (A1), Antigua

    28 South Africa (A2) v Sri Lanka (B1), Guyana

    29 West Indies (D2) v New Zealand (C1), Antigua

    30 Ireland (D1) v England (C2), Guyana

    31 Australia (A1) v B2, Antigua

    APRIL
    1 West Indies (D2) v Sri Lanka (B1), Guyana

    2 B2 v New Zealand (C1), Antigua

    3 Ireland (D1) v South Africa (A2), Guyana

    4 England (C2) v Sri Lanka (B1), Antigua

    7 B2 v South Africa (A2), Guyana

    8 Australia (A1) v England (C2), Antigua

    9 Ireland (D1) v New Zealand (C1), Guyana

    10 West Indies (D2) v South Africa (A2), Grenada

    11 England (C2) v B2, Barbados

    12 Sri Lanka (B1) v New Zealand (C1), Grenada

    13 Australia (A1) v Ireland (D1), Barbados

    14 South Africa (A2) v New Zealand (C1), Grenada

    15 B2 v Ireland (D1), Barbados

    16 Australia (A1) v Sri Lanka (B1), Grenada

    17 South Africa (A2) v England (C2), Barbados

    18 Ireland (D1) v Sri Lanka (B1), Grenada

    19 West Indies (D2) v B2, Barbados

    20 Australia (A1) v New Zealand (C1), Grenada

    21 West Indies (D2) v England (C2), Barbados

Australia would appear to be doing everything right at the right time to be favourites but can Ireland get any joy out of the Supers 8s? The first game is the perfect one, the Auld Enemy who have looked just about average so far while Ireland will be wound up to the max one imagines, will it be enough?

Joyce has hit two half centuries, KP has hit two swift 50s and Collingwood is proberly the most solid batsman. Bell and Flintoff have not added much to the totals. The bowling attack has been spotty (or should that read slow?) with Anderson the best in terms of wickets taken but with Panesar and Flintoff there's always a chance of something sparking.

All to play for on Friday 30th.

    Mike.

Irelands best chance of a win is against Bangladesh (assuming the tigers the qualify) after that the next best is against England.

As for who will come out of the Super 8's, well its 4 from 6 really. Australia and New Zealand have an advantage as they already have 2 points and still both Ireland and Banglades (probably)to play.

    Australia
    New Zealand
    Sout Africa
    Sri Lanka

    for the semi's for me.

On a side note, Ireland will win 50,000 on top of prize money for finishing bottom of the super 8's. The ICU have confirmed that prize money will be split between the players. If Ireland finish 7th they get 100,000 and so on, so big incentives for the players, apart from pride

Will the ICU themselves receive any prize money? They seem in deperate need of some funding.

Well the money is for the ICU, but they have decided it should be split between the team. According to the Tribune today, there are a few companies looking to give the ICU some funds.

Aye, saw that in the Turbine.... the ICU sounds like they didn't at all bargain on the Super 8's, and will be well in the red at the end of the tournament.

ICU might mean Intensive Care Unit, if we dont get sponsors. We should though, its short term pain.

would be nice for the teams sponsor to at least match the prize money! Considering how much money the ****ing bank gouges out of us and its massive profits.imo;)

Bank of Ireland's sponsorship ends after the WC. It remains to be seen if they do.

The issue is, though, they are an invisible sponsor for the tournament. Because ScotiaBank are the "official tournament sponsors", they are able to veto any other financial company appearing, including team shirts. Its why Travelex arent sponsoring Australia (Emirates are), likewise for Vodafone and England. Most countries have sponsors on their sleeves.

To me, its a bit of a crock that Ireland's sponsors arent on their shirts. Its not as if ScotiaBank and BoI are in direct competition with each other!

I'm worried about New Zealand doing well, and I still won’t write of England. The winners are in bold. I really hope that for their behavior over the last couple of decades and for having in Hayden,Ponting and Mc Grath the most unlikable players in the sport that Australia do not win, but they impressed me the most in the group stages.

They have a chance against Bangladesh and who knows if they are put into bat first against New Zealand and hit a biggish total (250) New Zealand’s middle order may panic, they have before messed up when chasing modest totals. However I think it’s much more likely Bond will rip through them and I expect the black caps will stroll to a comfortable victory. I know England is probably the worst of the rest but it would be an incredible shock much bigger than the one against Pakistan if they won that game. They haven’t a prayer against the rest I’m afraid, I know they ran South Africa close before but that was a friendly and I would be stunned if this game was anything other than a trashing.
It probably will be evens for Ireland to lose all their games in the super 8’s for any of you unpatriotic punters!!

    tbh you are dead right.

We have a (small) chance against England and Bangladesh but we will get annihilated by everyone else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    I echo that, Ruggie.

Yeah I just hope that Ireland and Bangladesh arent totally thrashed. People are saying that the super 8s will be duller and more predictable with them in it and pakistan and india at home. I know they've already proved people wrong but even still I guess the old schoolers arent happy.

Heres my attempt at guessing the final standings:

    1 Australia
    2 Sri lanka
    3 West Indies
    4 South Africa

    5 NZ
    6 England
    7 Ireland
    8 Bangladesh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

Yeah, I would agree with that order on Super8 - all major upsets would be due to bad weather, D/L etc than any particularly spirited performance by any team - Bangladesh's victory against India looks like once off considering how they did against SL and Bermuda. Oh, Ireland could still pull a few good ones, if toss and everything else goes their way.

SL does look in top nic, highly likely to be a Aus vs SL final, and I think Semis and Final are going to be very tight.

Ireland are 9-1 to win 2 or more matches in the Super 8s.

    Worth a punt?

    All Ireland team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Its the flag/emblem of the Irish Cricket Union. As Ruggie said, its an all-Ireland team, like the way an IRFU flag represents Ireland at Rugby matches abroad.
