I only ask because you hear alot of talk about overcrowding in classes and in my school that is not the case. So I want to know where it is the case.

    In my classes.
    Irish - H - 2
    Maths - H - 5
    English - H - 7
    Geography - H+O - 7
    German - O - 9
    Physics - H+O -5
    Chemistry - H+O - 6

I have heard there are upwards of 30 students in some classes in certain schools.

just want to know your LC class size.

    Grind school?

I can't understand how some people have classes with under 10 people, you guys must go to really small schools....

There's 22 in my main class, which is together for Irish and English. For everything else there's between 15 and 25 in each class. Never bothered counting.

    Irish H - 22-25
    English H - 20-22
    Maths O - 22
    French H - 12-13
    Biology H - 14
    Chemistry H - 10
    History H - 8
Music H - 1 (well it is private tutoring...)

    Irish(H) - 15ish
    English(H) - 20ish
    Maths(H) - 8
    French(H) - 20-25ish
    Music - 7
    Art - 15ish
    Physics - 3
Applied Maths - 15ish (though I do this outside school)

I hear there's about 30 in the Ordinary level maths class which is a bit... unbalanced, but sure what can you do! Only about 40/50 in the year anyway.

Oh, and I'm in 5th year, also, so the classes (I suspect french definitely) will prolly change next year.

Irish-12(2 at Hons, 5 at Ord, 5 at Foundation)
Accounting-6(2 at Hons, 4 at Ord)
Physics-9(2 at Hons, 7 at Ord
French-5(2 at Hons, 3 at Ord)
History-10(4 at Hons, 6 at Ord)

in my school, for the lc, they have a maximum of 25 in any class at any time and a minimum of 10 because there used to be 2 in an economics class and this was using up one teacher and its something to do with when they return the class size numbers and other figures for teachers,it decides their funding

WOW, most people here seem to have very small classes.
I dont attend a grind school but their is a minimum of 20 people in most classes and classes like maths(O) have 50 students in one sitting.
Physics has about 20 people though with a mix of hons and ordinary:D

I know a guy from the Institute of Education, and he told me that his classes can be as big as 200+ people:eek:, although it is the biggest "grinds" school in the country.
Most of us have it lucky;)

We have a limit of 30 in my school.

Irish- 17 (Honours! The pass ones are nearly full)
    English- 25
Maths- 29 (was 16 before the honours people dropped down!)
    French- 29 I think
Biology- 21, but they only fit 24
    History- full, 30
    Geography- full, 30
    Religion/Guidance- 26?

Thats quite amazing , most my classes are around the 30 mark like the norm , chemistry is 12 and TG is only 5.

Where is your school? You must be getting on well with that much of the teachers attention?

Well, a few people from my year left and went to a grind school, which has brought my class sizes down to a great level, def. not too much and not too small.

    English(2nd Honours) - 21
    Maths H -18
    Spanish - 19
    Accounting - 12
    Geography - 20
    Physics - 19
    Applied Maths - 14

    What she said....

    I've never counted the rest.

English HL- between 25 and 30
    Irish HL- 20ish
    Maths HL- 20ish
    French HL- 25ish
    Chemistry - 10
    Biology - 12
Geography- 25 ( Class is way too big compared to junior cert. People have taken up the subject even though they havent done it for the junior cert and the people who have taken it up are all messers who thought that the subject is easy when its actually not. In actual fact there is two classes for geography which are on at different times due to options etc. My teacher is really pissed off with these people and its coming to the stage where they will be kicked out.)

All the higher level classes should go down in numbers since im only in transition year. Especially the numbers doing Irish and maths HL.

Same, we have 2 history, 2 biology and 2 geography classes. Bent.

Defintely a total f*** up. In my school its just geography we have 2 classes for. Major imbalances though. My class has 25 people(half of which are total f***ing dopes who dont give a f*** about school as I have mentioned before) and the other has like 10. Since the demand for geography was high they had to put 2 classes on at different times which unfortuntately ruined peoples option choices as they were unable to get their top 3 options.(We do 7 subjects for leaving cert english, irish, maths, french plus 3 options) Luckily I got my first 3 choices but one of my friends only got his first ,second and fifth choice. A lot of people wanted to do biology but they couldnt because of the extra geography class.

    English - H - 32
    Irish - H - 18
    Maths - H - 18
    Biology - H - 23
    German - H - 18
    Accounting - H - 15
    Physics - H - 3

I've got a wierd combo I'm in the biggest class in my year (My english class) And the smallest in my year... Everyone reckons a class with only three people sucks but's it's brilliant! We've a great teacher, it's me and my two best friends in class with me and generally we've a lot of fun and Physics is my favourite subject now!

I'm only in TY but we were sorted into our fifth year maths classes at the beginning of the year. My class has about 36 people in it which is pretty disgraceful as no work gets done whatsoever, and it's one of the only classes where the teacher actually tries to get us to work cos we've started the LC course early. I'm sure it'll be much smaller by this time next year though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

^You'll find your TY maths class's most important purpose is to make those who should be doing pass realise that they should do so rather than starting the LC course early. You'll probably redo everything you do in 4th year at some stage in 5th or 6th year in a smaller class. Honours Maths classes are always absurdly big at the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭JC06

    I'm in fifth year now....
    English-H-14
    Irish-H-8
Maths-H-7...(I think we're all dropping to pass haha)
    Accounting-H+O- 6 people,3 higher 3 ordinary
    Biology-H+O-12..5 higher and 7 ordinary
    French-H+O- 14...2 higher and 12 ordinary
    Geography-H+O- smallest geography class..7 people..3 higher 4 ordinary

I hadn't realised how small my classes were until I did this but they make up for that in noise!

Grinds schools generally have bigger classes. I worked in a severely disadvantaged school last year and honestly can only say they got the best educational advantages I've ever seen. I had 8 in honours Irish and they all got a minimum of a high B, not my doing, tis impossible to do badly with that few. We literally had a semi-circle of desks and it was like a big study group, amazing way to teach and I can only imagine an amazing way to learn!

    English H - 31
    Irish H - 26
    Maths H - 35 (used to be 41)
    Physics H - 26
    Chemistry H - 15
    Biology H - 30
    App Maths H/O - 3

Very overcrowded. No wonder we're nowhere near finished.
