Ok so with all the stuff that went on over the last year or so, and with all the "whos responsible for having sex (or something stupid like that)" threads on the page there, I thought I'd ask this and see what the general concensus(sc) was. What do you think the age of consent for sex should be in Ireland. And why if you want to reply?

P.S. There should be a poll with this, not sure if it came up.

What should be the age of consent for sex in Ireland. 108 votes

    12 or under
    0% 0 votes
    13
    7% 8 votes
    14
    0% 1 vote
    15
    1% 2 votes
    16
    10% 11 votes
    17
    49% 53 votes
    18
    23% 25 votes
    19 or over
    7% 8 votes

I voted for 17, but some people aren't mature enough to make the decision even at that age.

We should drop it to that of Kazakhstan.

People are going to have sex no matter what the age of consent is so it doesn't really matter. They should have it at least at 18, if not older.

do away with it altogether for people of the same age, they'll do it anyway

Don't you mean raise it? The age of consent there is 18. You have been watching too much Borat.

Is this poll for humans only or do animals count as well?

Think to yourself - what is the age of consent there for?
Then think of your children and the age of person you would like them to be sleeping with. Should your 12 year old kid be allowed to sleep with someone who is much older than them?

They have the right attitute in the UK where the age of consent is 16, but if you're under 16 and have sex with someone born within (I think) 24 months of you, it is not an offence, meaning 15 year olds shagging 16 year olds or vice versa is fine. But there's no reason why, with proper sex ed., that the age of consent should not be 15. I mean, they're doing it anyway by that point...

15.. sex education in both uk and ireland should be made far more aware. (i can only speak for both countries ive lived in, i believe london has made kids far more aware in recent years, scotland is still a joke i believe)

The problem is parents sadly that they want to shun away from sexual acts towards there children, (which i would maybe be to, im not a parent yet).

But far more awareness in schools is needed, lets face it.. at 15 you are VERY aware of that it is happening and you are very intrested in what it is etc, and alot by that age you have no doubt done some "fooling" around (hand in pant action etc).

Our sex ed was taught to us about 2 times (literally like 2 x 30 min classes) when i was in high school all those years ago, and it was given to us by our religious education teacher who was very embarressed.. so much so you just couldnt be bothered listening and thought "you knew better".

Obviously not drop the age, otherwise paedophiles would be rubbing their sweaty palms with glee. I like that idea in England though in a previous post of the 24 months thing.

I think 15's ok, im 14 and i consider myself responsible. There are more un-responsible people way older then me.

i think 16 is fine for both male and female and probably gay sex aswell(as far as i know the age of "gay consent" is 18 at the mo could be wrong though)

i think same age sex is prob ok under 16 aswell

16 or 17, as long as it's the same for everyone, male, female, gay, lesbian, other.

There's some country that doesn't have an age of consent. Can't remember which though.

Wouldn't this be a great way for the police to catch any unknown pedos?

Really? Is that not a bit discriminatory?

    Btw, I said 16

    17 in my opinion

    16. you are allowed to get married then so what do they think people would be doing , kniting? :D

though to be honest once its consentual i dont think it should be illegal at any age if your within a year of each other. honestly what does criminalising two 13yr olds actually achieve?

it sets a fine example to all other aspiring 13 year olds

16 for both, BUT with an effective provision for consensual sex for anyone in the 14-16 age group, provided the age difference is no greater than 24 months.

This would cater for the reality of what actually goes on, while having proper protection in place against sexual predators.

Ok to tie in with this poll I think it might be interesting to have a poll on when people had sex for the first time, just to see how the figures match up.
