Hi, I'm looking for some reccomendations for a sat nav. Was in halfords today and now im more confused than I was this morning!

Researching it for my dad who is an auctioneer in North Cork so he needs rural mapping to be pretty up to speed. Also they family tend to holiday in europe so mapping for there is a plus too. Cost shold be around €400 but cheaper is better.

Was looking at garmin units in Halfords and the 310D looked like a good unit but I forgot to suss the rural mapping. Do all the units "talk" to you? Are the updates seriously €75 p/yr??? Seems a bit excessive.

Has anyone claimed this as a business expense as it could now be considered a tool of many trades?

I was looking on pixmania too and they had a Nuvi 350 in a bundle for €427 with windscreen mount and charger. Would this not be standard kit when you buy any sat nav??

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/512303/art/garmin/nuvi-350-gps-navigator-eu.html?itag=9698

Sorry for the long post but theres a lot more to this area than meets the eye!

    Cheers in advance.

windscreen mount and charger do come as standard with the Garmin Nuvi units. I have the Nuvi 300 and was in Cork last week the only road that was missing coverage was part of the new motorway (around the toll bridge), other than that was very impressed was looking for a townsland around Macroom and found it no bother.

I'm not sure if the updates cost money or not but by looking at the Garmin website it appears the updates are free.

Go for the TomTom Europe (think they've reduced it to 350 in Halfords)
It's a nice size good features and the Navteq maps are great - avoid the GB/IRL version (same unit different maps)
You also have the option of changing the voices on it (easy to pick up on the web)
The updates are expensive on all of them I'm afraid

Wexford, I know you said in the other thread that you don't need the bluetooth, mp3 features etc, but the Garmin 310 is only an extra e20, at e320 including shipping from this site here http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=261&xSec=1 You'd probably have it by Wednesday too, something to consider.
