Contraceptive Pill Question

I'm on the contraceptive pill. It's a 21 day packet, which means there are seven pill-free days. I was just wondering are you at risk of getting pregnant if you have sex during these pill-free days??

To answer your question, if you take the pill correctly for the 21 days then you have nothing to worry about.

I'm going to berate you slightly here for taking the pill when you do not fully understand how it works, or how to take it. Read the leafleft that comes with the pill from cover to cover. It explains how to take it. If you have any further questions then head to your GP or pharmacist.

Well, the thing is, I've only just began to take it, and it doesn't mention that in the leaflet, at least not the one I have anyway. It explains the whole hormone-free process but doesn't explain if you're protected during this time. thanks anyway.

Fair enough, that's a pretty big omission on the part of the leaflet.

The hormones in the pill act to prevent you from ovulating by convincing your body that it is already pregnant, so by the time that you've taken 21 and start the pill free period, there should be no egg present for possible fertilisation. The pill-free period is meant to allow you to have a "period", before you start again.

I use "period" because even though it feels exactly the same as a normal period, the biological mechanisms behind it are slightly different.

Duda your wrong, im on Microlite and it says you can get pregnant during the 7 days and to use condoms during the 7 days

I'm also on Microlite, and have been for 6.5 years. You can have sex unprotected during the 7-day gap, the reason being what I've previously state above. There should be no egg present to fertilise.

Otherwise, I've been beating the odds all these years. :)

I have never heard that to be the case on any contraceptive pill,
to be sure check with the leaflet you get with the pill and check with your dr who prescribed it.

Are you sure you're not confusing the rule for not having unprotected sex for 7 days after you miss a pill or take it late?

I've never heard anything like that with any of the pills that I've taken. The one I'm currently on Ovranette, says quite clearly in the leaflet "You do not need to use any other form of contraception during the seven-day break provided you have taken the 21 pills properly and you start the next pack on time."

'How much does the microlite pill cost for 6 months? I recently got a prescription from my doctor but as i am a student i dont know if i will be able to afford it'

I'm not sure how much Microlite is, as I'm on another pill, but you don't have to get all of it at once - I usually just get one month's supply at a time.

Yeah, with repeat prescriptions you just get what you can afford at the time up to the maximum they will hand out (with some medications they will only hand out a few weeks worth at a time, to prevent abuse, loss, theft, etc.)

OP be careful of what advice you take here, if unsure talk to your GP.

As long as you are taking the pill as instructed, theoratically you should be ok, however outside factors such as illness, other medications, vomitting, the scutters can influence the affectiveness of the pill.

I thought the Mods have a rule about seeking medical advice on this forum?

It can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy but it's usually around €11 for one month. Some places do a student discount, which can be handy, espec if you're getting a few months supply at the time.

I get all 6 months of my prescription for microlite filled at once, and it costs somewhere in the region of 40-45 Euro. Some student medical centres will provide a few months of medication free, as they receive samples from the companies. I often received 2-3 months of the pill free from my student doctor when I was in college.

    ZaZa 78,

I suggest you go to a GP who can go through all the various options if you are considering changing your contraception. Some interesting information on www.womenshealthclinic.ie

Microlite is about 12-14euro a month... Depends which pharmacy you get it from as they can vary...

Why get the 6months all at once? You cant go pick it up ever months, of maybe 2 at a time.... They pharmacy will give you back the prescription if you are not collecting the full 6 months

I get the 6 months at once because its cheaper! 12*6 is 72 euro while getting the 6 months at once costs somewhere between 40-50 euro depending on the pharmacy. I also find that its easier to lose a small bit of paper than the actual pills themselves.

    Hi OP,

as has already been pointed out, medical advice is not permitted in these forums. Seeing as you have quite a few questions about how to use the contraceptive pill, I strongly suggest that you visit the GP or family planning clinic that prescribed it to you, and seek more information there.

    Thread Closed.
