Guys, I'm looking to take up a Martial Art. The thing is, I'm not sure which. I'm looking for something which would complement full-body strength with agility, but also the ability to fight(d'uh, says you).
I work hard in the gym, and have a reasonable bit of muscle, but I feel I could be a bit nimbler/more athletic. Also, I'm not much of a fighter .i.e, wouldn't consider myself hugely streetwise, and to be honest I don't feel 100% safe in Dublin these days (I got bashed up on a night out about 18 months ago).
Next question is naturally, where could I get beginner's classes - I live in Chapelizod, so anywhere in the city and surrounding is very do-able, but I work shift, so a selection of times would help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    dave.

from your description I think you're looking for something like MMA or other combat sports such as Judo, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, BJJ. They're very physical but also very technical.

can you make it to rathcoole (www.sbgireland.com)? If you drive, there are lots of clubs on the m50 ring for example SBG northisde (www.sbgnorthside.com)

Hi, why not try looking up Capoeira on youtube or google. It may interest you, extremely hard on the limbs to start with but hugely enjoyable, plus after a few years you'll look the biz! 3 Groups in Dublin, Officina, Candius etc, not sure of the 3rd name. All have beginners classes and are all welcoming. Its a very social scene. Good luck & take the plunge!! :D

Martial arts incorporated is always a good bet. There is a studio on Brunswick street. Which is only a short walk from the Smithfield Luas stop.

Check out the web site for timetable, directions etc.

    http://www.martialartsinc.com

Open 7 days a week and will cover pretty much what you are looking for.

    Best of luck!

Yeah, Martial Arts Inc do a few different times too, so that'll suit your working shifts. They do 1pm classes Monday to Friday, and 7pm most days too. They've also got some different evening classes.

For confidence on the street though I'd say do a self defence course too. Sometimes Martial Arts can be very sport based, but not useful on the street. (For example, we don't bite in the ring, but you better believe you'll bet bitten on the street). I'd recommend www.cqcireland.com for that.

Well you've got alot of advice already. Someone mentioned Coolmine Judo, an excellent choice.

And if your interested in purely Self Defence checkout http://www.maireland.proboards50.com/index.cgi?board=sd

Jon from that forum run's a TKD and SD club up in Cabra, you could PM him for details.

You might want to check around a few clubs before finding the one that rocks your boat, because there's a style out there for everyone.
