On TV, no one uses safety matches. Are strike-anywhere matches available in Ireland anywhere?

I don't think so. AFAIK all that's available now is safety matches. Those old Cara Friendly matches were handy.

It is possible to light a safety match by striking it on glass - but 9 times out of 10 the match head gets destroyed.

Thats an excellent question. I wanna be able to go into a pub and light matches off my stubble. How sweet would that be... I remember hearing once that you can get them from army supply stores but not sure how true that is.

They were withdrawn a while back..one of the reasons was that they contain phosporous which can lead to an unpleasant condition called "Phossy Jaw"

I still have a pack of Chinese strike-anywhere matches my Dad got ages ago. They're pretty cool. :)

Swan matches aren't literal strike anywhere matches, but you can strike them off a wall and that.

The strike any where didn't use white phosporous, which causes phossy jaw.
I'm remember having a box of strike any where igniting in my pocket through friction. Mmmmmmm toast-y.

You can get em in a shop in Blessington Wicklow.. I'l have a look tomorrow and double check. One of them Old school sel anything shops, like anotehr poster said I think they are Swan, don't think you can.. flick them lit.. as in with your thumb.. but off walls etc no problem, or a bigg stubbly face.
