Is it worth exchanging 360 for PS3? No fanboys. Please try to be impartial

For anyone out there who has/has used both, can you please tell me, in your own opinion, is it worth trading in my 360 for a PS3?
I rarely use the 360 as I'm stuck into Zelda on my wii at the moment. Have enough games/console etc to trade for PS3 and a game.
I enjoy FPS and RPGs. Not gone on driving games and sports games. I'm know I'll get fanboys from either camp. I'm not overly concerned about power etc. As far as I'm concerned it's apples and oranges. Just concerned with comparing the variety of games available or in the pipeline or the types of games the consoles tend to lean toward. I've never owned a PS1,2 or XBOX so I'm not allied with either side (Although I do tend to lean in the direction of nintendo but I have a wii so not important re this post)

Thanks for the opinions folks and enjoy your machines :)

With Halo 3 on the way I would keep the 360!
Just save up for a ps3!

regardless of what camp your in it's very hard to pick a console for someone else.

Performance wise there doesn't seem to be much the PS 3 can do the XBOX can't.

It looks like 3rd party game dev's are going to go multi plat with a lot of the big exclusice PS games.

Have a look at what's in the pipeline for both platforms over the next 12 months or so and make a choice.

What games do you have/want for the 360 and what games do you want for the PS3?

Okay all fanboyism aside, and looking at it from a gamers perspective, id say you would have to be pretty stupid to trade a 360 for a ps3.
PS3 has what, mabye 3 interesting games worth playing. VF5, motorstorm, and resistance. Resistance has been getting pretty average reviews, motorstorm getting positive reviews, and VF5 is coming to 360 anyway.
So if you traded a360, you basically be stuck with a really nice new console, but nothing to play on it. youd miss out on Bioshock, mass effect, and halo 3 in the coming months. All the while still playing resistance and motorstorm. It just would not be a viable option in my opinion. The cons far outweigh the pros.

The way I see it is, both consoles are in real terms as of now on par with each other graphically. The 360 has more games (its been out longer). 90% of the games that end up on the PS3 will be on the 360 also.

The 360 has from what I have seen a better online service even though you pay for it, you get what you pay for. But Sony has an excuse they have only started theres.

Blu Ray format is unproven, HD DVD is at this point in time the industry favourite. HD DVD is optional with the 360.

At this point I can't see any sane reason to exchange a 360 for a PS3 maybe in a years time, who knows what will happen.

GTA4 will be released on the 360 first.:o

I don't have extensive experience with the 360 but have played a bit of it and it's a good machine no doubt however I have always found Sony kit to be of very high quality (my opinion) whereas my experience with MS isn't great (my windows pc crashes every now and again and I have to continually but spyware/virus protection for it).

Thanks for the input folks. It's only a thought I was playing around with at the moment anyway. I must admit, that Mass Effect looks amazing. Guess I'll have to give up the crack pipe for a few months for the PS3. :)

And thanks for the impartiality. If there's one thing I can't stand it's "360 PWNS PS3/PS3 OWNS 360"

Strictly speaking, no. The Ps3 has pleny of potential, but it's gonna be a while before Sony start making use of it.

I have both machines. The long and short is no. This may change in 18-24 months, but at the rate games are going multiformat, unless you really need a Blu Ray player - stick with your 360.

What on earth has the fact you have to install spyware/anti virus on a pc got to do with choosing a console.

You would have to be really stupid to trade in an xbox 360 for a PS3. Both are similarly powered. The xbox didn't have the greatest selection of games but that has changed now and there are plenty of japanese games on the 360. The PS3 doesn't have any exclusives worth trading it in for and none within the next year. Also if you like FPS and RPG the xbox 360 is the better choice. FPS games are traditionally better on the 360 and xbox live makes it a far better experience on line. Square Enix are supporting the PS3 but there are rumours of them going multiplatform. Anyway Square Enix aren't as good as they used to be. All their best talent went to Mistwalker who are currently making games for the 360.

Save your money and get a PS3 when you have the money. You will regret getting rid of the 360 when the next few great games are released on it.

To be honest............its hard to say, as everyone has said :)

Everyone is different, they like different games.........if you don't want to shell out for both, it'll come down to exclusives..
Both systems will have their multi-platform games.....i.e. you stick with your 360, you'll have your MS exclusives and your third-party games..........you sell your 360 for a PS3, you'll have your Sony exclusives and your third-party games..
Its a win-win situation really, but the only way to cover your bases is to own both really......if only for those exclusives....Which camp do you favour more ?
The list of exclusives on both sides are equally impressive/unimpressive, so if you're only going for one and, for example, love the likes of ICO,SOTC, there is only one option......same goes the other way for Halo3 etc..

If I had a gun to my head to pick only one.......I would probably run away !!
But if I wanted one machine to live.......probably the PS3..
The Team ICO factor appeals to me more, its a more comfortable playing experience (fan/drive noise drives me nuts - something MS need to address in the next revision, changing the DVD drive is not enough), presentation-wise a far more impressive machine...............but the Blu-ray seals it for me..
The PS3 is an excellent BD player (and I mean that compared to a standalone Panny) with the correct setup, and IMO, the 360 with the HD-DVD addon is an awful playback device (then again, any home cinema enthusiast will plump for a dedicated HD-DVD player anyway)..

To each his own though, there are just as many people who'll plump for a 360 for similar reasons and more........officially, I couldn't do without either, nor would I want to..
So hold onto the 360 and save for the PS3 :)

LOL.. Join the club. I like both for different reasons. There are plenty of things that bug me about the 360, and things it does better than the PS3 and vice versa.

Motorstorm is great, but I love Viva Pinata just as much and can't wait for titles like Banjo Kazooie and Lair. Best of both worlds. :)

Basing it on what I have ssen so far I would stick with the 360!!
Got mine last week and I am loving it, I detested the first Xbox because of the MS monoply etc etc but I bought one a few months back and really liked it!! So I decided to get a 360 and I'm blown away with it straight away whereas the PS3 did not blow me away with any of the games I've seen/played on it!!

Yea Ive had a 360 since christmas after having all the sony consoles before the PS3. A games console is mostly about the games, but just cant think of enough or more than a few exclusive titles coming out for the PS3.

Maybe when the PS3 is cheaper and has more promising excluives Id get it.

Can I just ask, what is the line up of exclusives for the PS3? I know MGS 4 , GT, etc but what else?

Errr.... there's another version of Wipeout on the cards. Right now that's all i can think of.

    MGS4 may not stay exclusive.

I own both. And the 360 is definitely the better console all round right now(though I can't emphasise enough how nice it is to have a silent-running PS3)

However, there's nothing good on the 360 that I haven't already played through. Therefore the PS3 is getting a lot more playtime right now and looking at release lists it will do for quite a while(I'm actually planning to sell my 360 and buy the upgraded model when they release it later in the year).

In the long run its hard to say. For me personally, the PS3 has more games in the long run that interest me, but that's because I couldn't care less about first person shooters and I like a lot of Japanese games. It depends what you're into.

although the launch titles for ps3 arent that great, the future of gaming belongs to sony for the time being. you would definitely be better off swopping ur xbox 360 for a ps3, xbox and the wii simply cant compete with the ps3.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,073 ✭✭✭mickoneill30

The Blue-Ray seals it for me. I don't want to pay an extra €200 for something I don't want or need. I don't have a HD TV yet and it'll be a year or two before I spalsh out for one. By that time Blue-Ray or HD-DVD will have a winner and will be a lot cheaper. I don't need to be one of the first to pay through the nose for something that's not going to benefit me too much.

The topic creator specifically asked that no fanboys post. Please provide some factual evidence to backup your opinion.

Personally I believe that you should stick with the 360 for now. The games due for release this year on the 360 (Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3 for example) more than warrant you keeping your 360.

Sony's CEO has recently stated that it is not their intention to actively retain exclusive 3rd party titles... evidenced by DMC4 going multiplatform. The system-sellers for the PS3 are only due for release in 2008 or later (MGS4 and the next FF instalment).

When the PS3 price is dropped by €100 and a few decent exclusive titles have been released, it might be time to consider a purchase.

    Just my opinion.

I agree with all the above posts. Stick with what you have for the moment. Unless there is some game that is coming out exculsively to the PS3 that you must have then just wait.

For me, Gran Turismo will be the turning point but with this not due out till late next year I can see no point for me to get one (I have a thing for GT, so if I dont have a PS3 by the time its released I'll buy it then;) ).

If you dont have a hd screen then keep the 360. In a years time the next format war should be nearly over (or a clearer idea of who will win is known) between HD-DVD and Bluray. If Bluray goes belly up, PS3 is stuck with a player for an un-used format, where as the 360 could just as easily get a Bluray add on if HD-DVD fails.....

I havent played the PS3, and I have only played the Xbox 360 briefly. But my opinion would be this. Halo 3 is coming out soon, so thats a plus. The PS3 is awfully expensive at the moment, and there big game this year is also on Xbox 360 (GTA IV) I would stick with the 360, save your money and buy yourself a nice hat.

Where can you trade in Xbox 360 and games for PS3? I'll do it if there is somewhere cause I only bought a 360 cause it was half price in Tesco and I never really play it. Have 3 or 4 games I think. I'd sell it but it's so much hassle.

At the end of the day, aside from the built in BluRay player there is little to separate the 360 and PS3, although the 360 has a better online system.
The games are all so similar that it will boil down to price, though talking to my mate yesterday and he just assumes the future belongs to Sony so will be buying one anyway, just not right now. I am inclined to agree, their position in popular culture with "Playstation" meaning "videogames" to an awful lot of folk may mean that no matter how accomplished the 360 it'll never have a chance, but then, Atari, Sega and Nintendo have all been in Sonys dominant position before and their period on the top eventually came to an end.
Me, I'll get one eventually, when either system exclusives or the developers experience with the console produces games I simply must have, but til then I'll quietly save my cents.

if you dont play the xbox360, there is nothing to say that you should get a ps3. everyone agrees the xbox360 has better games at the minute. So this is to say - why are you getting a console at all?

so you can tell all the kids at skool?

You either like games or you don't, and if you cant find any on the 360 then begorra

Skyuser - Due to the lack of anybody knowing, I'd say try GameStop, Smyths, Game, Xtravision etc.

OP, as said above, if just on games I'd wait untill you know what exclusive games each console will have then make up your mind.

    OP

in my opinion trading a 360 for a ps3 is crazy. with exclusives such as mass effect, halo 3, fable 2, forza 2, bioshock, splinter cell and the pc crossovers like Command and conquer and all the multi platform titles available and sony losing out on exclusivity on DMC4, GTA and with FFXIII and MGS rumoured to be on their way to 360 too it makes no sense in my head.

At this moment in time the only two exclusive games left that are worth anything are the two I mentioned above, MGS and FFXIII.

there are a few little ones that look ok but not many, little big world being one but it wont make you buy a console.

Traded in 2 x PSP, 1 x GBA & 15 various games in Gamestop this afternoon for himself. Got a discount in total of €475 off the PS3.
We held onto the XBox 360, and the PS2 (they were only giving €40 trade in value on this). So got the €700 deal (including 2 games) for €225 with trade in values. He's happy out.
IMHO they are not offering enough of a trade in value for the Xbox 360 to make it worth your while. According to the store, they dropped the trade in value for the console last week before the PS3 was brought into Ireland by a large amount.
If it's not against forum rules, I'll post exactly what trade ins if anyone likes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

I'd stick with the 360. Game developers have had that extra year and a bit to get to know the capabilities of the 360. GTA4 is a clincher too I reckon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭Skyuser

Rang em and they said €250 for the premium 360....I might as well go for it. I paid €227 or something in Tesco.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭anto1208

I have both ( spoilt i know ) . In my honest opinion id keep the xbox for at least another 6 months (fingers crossed it doesnt break down ) purely on the games . The PS3 is better and has more usefull features but for a games console you need games very simple . the fact the ps3 has been out now for 5 months and there still isnt any decent games and the only ones coming are allreay on xbox and allready discounted ( ie fear released in 3 weeks on ps3 is all ready down to 45 euro in game ) .

    Change but not just yet

This thread is nearly 2 weeks old now, so has the OP come up with a decision?
Plenty of sense in the posts above for sure. Just decided to throw in my 2 cents. I don't own either the PS3 or the 360 (yet), and I ain't a fanboy, I own the PS1 and 2 and a Gamecube and Wii (as well as some older consoles from way back!), so one might even say that I'm not an MS fan at all. However... being an original Gran Tourismo fan big time (car nut that I am), I never fully enjoyed it because of the controller. It was always lacking for me, like I was almost in full control, but not quite. However, when I played PGR3 on the 360, I realised that this is now the best driving game I can get, solely based on the controller. (The PS3 with GT has potential to look better and have as good or if not better car physics), but I'm no longer interested because I've played a PS3 and was very disappointed to see the same controller (only lighter, wireless and somewhat motion sensitive). It made my decision for me that when I do have the money for my next console it will be the 360.
I know lots of people will probably disagree, and are entitled to, but I'm exceptionally fussy about the controller (the gamecube one I love) and the 360 wins in this department, which adds a lot to any game.
So I'd recommend two things... play a PS3 and see if you have a preference for the controller, and the 2nd would be that if you decide after playing one that you prefer the PS3 then hold off for a good while till the titles and the price make it worth while. Then make a new decision based on whats out for both at the time. But I feel that you do have a good console at the moment, and presently the benefit of a trade in isn't there yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

    Xbox > PS3

For the time being anyway, if you just look at the list of games coming out for the ps3 over the next couple of months they are mostly 360 ports.

The online arena for the ps3 is pretty weak compared to the already established xbox live.

Ps3 might be worth waiting atleast 6-12 months for when the price plummits and the developers know what they are working with to get the max out of.
