dunno if this the right place for this...

recently saw a ray mears programme about living on the coast of britian and he was cooking shellfish collected off a beach

supposedly they are quite nice and easy to cook.

was wondering is it safe/legal to collect small amount of shellfish down on merrion strand for that purpose, as it is something i'd like to try.

Its certainly legal provided you dont start dredging up the beach or something like that.As for safe. There's a couple of considerations..try to gather shellfish away from things like outfall pipes or in rockpools, they may have built up certain toxic elements. If you gather from a clean beach thats exposed to the action of the tides you should have no problems. Also, try to starve any shellfish you gather in abucket of clean seawater for a couple of days, this lets them pass out anything unpleaant that mightt be in thier gut.Lastly cook them well,in the case of mussels dont eat any that dont open as they're likely to cause problems.Bon appetit!
