PC World Business!

Ordered a HP LaserJet printer from PC World Business website http://www.pcwb.ie/ today for the company I work for, and made payment by CC. About an hour later got a call from them saying they can not sell me the printer because I did not enter a VAT number in the web form.

I told him that, as an insurance company, we do not pay VAT and don't have a VAT number, have never had a VAT number. In 16 years of business we have bought hundreds of thousand of pounds worth of products, most from IT companies such as Dell and BT.

Sorry, he said, no can do!! Seems they are bringing them in from the UK and cannot do so without a VAT number.

    Go figure.

I'd have a look at any other companies headed notepaper and copy their
VAT number into the order form ;).
I'd guess it's to do with selling to punters instead of companies.

That VAT number requirement is the same for all EU countries AFAIK. They need to have the VAT number for their own tax authorities. Although some companies will accept company numbers(CRO). Do they not do this?

As regards the cut and paste suggestion , that qualifies as VAT fraud.
