I recently bought a 320 Gig external HD, gonna put all my TV shows etc on it. Its USB 2 and after doing some reading up apparently USB can do 480 Megs a second give or take. However mines only doin just under 2 meg a second. anyway I can speed things up?

While USB 2.0 can indeed do that speed, its unlikely the interface to the hd can do that. Also 480MegaBits = 60mega bytes.
You wont get a transfer anyway close to that.

from what to what ? From the external to/from your PC , if so , then maybe your pc , or the USB port you are using on your pc , is not USB2 but USB1.1 , even if they are USB2 , there can be issues using the main USB motherboard connections as they are all shared and some are low power.

For big external drives , a separate USB2 card like this , can really speed things up , they are cheap too.

Using one of these you should get way more throughput.

From a new PC to an Argosy External 320 Gb. its just slowish. Ive noticed that the speed is around 5 or 6 meg a second when transfering from SATA drives to the USB though, its about 2 meg a second from an IDE.

    Hey,

Can anyone recommend a good website to buy External HDD. I know the usual komplett.ie and pixmania.ie, but are there any other cheaper/ lower delivery cost websites that anyone can recommend.

    Thanks
    Tim
