Does anyone else dislike Starbuck?

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, it's just my taste, but am I the only one who doesn't like Starbuck?
(FYI: just the character, not Katee Sackhoff, who I'm sure is a lovely person)

Starbuck just gets on my nerves. Too many sci fi shows have one, a two dimensional woman character who's supposed to be "strong" but in reality is just a caustic personality (voyager had torres, DS9 had Kira neryse, TNG had Ro Laren).

Now, I realise that starbuck is supposed to be messed up, she drinks, she sleeps around, and my dislike of her is probably a validation of Sackhoof's acting, but GOD! every scene she's in, shes scowling at everyone, rude to everyone, pushing people around. One minute she's crying in her husbands arms, the next, she's not giving him the time of day.

Actually, it's not starbuck I dislike, it's the fact that the other characters don't seem to mind being treated like dirt. It's not that plausible. Sam Anders just prattles on "I love her" etc etc. God, you moron, get a divorce!

Ok, that's my inane rambling over with, feel free to comment on this or my latent insanity till your heart's content.

She's been a bit annoying in season 3, but apart from that she's a great character.

Starduck really was getting on my nerves there for the last season or so.
I though the character was great in the beginning. E.g. The ep where Adama told her to walk out of his office "while she could still walk" was excellent.

It seemed to me that the writers ran out of ideas for her around about the time when she became an alcoholic for one ep only. (They do have a plan, don't they? :eek: ). After that her actions became increasingly random and annoying. As the OP pointed out why did anyone put up with her? I thought there should have been some more explanation of her relationship with Adama Sr.
And the whole "love triangle thing" ........

Yes, that was a strange one. There was never any real explanation as to why Adama considered her to be almost his daughter. A Season 4 flashback episode perhaps!

Aside ive always liked Starbuch, granted there were some stupid moments like for example when earlier in Season 3 when she laid into Kat for not being a 'good person' like herself and the other pilots - that really seemed out of character, thanks to the writers.


EDIT: Actually, im an idiot. IIRC, Starbuck was about to marry the Admiral's son, Zack, before he bit the dust ? So, she was nearly his daughter-in-law.

Yes and she contributed to his death. I didn't think that explained why Starbuck was chosen for every mission in the early days, despite her many, many screw-ups. Possibly she reminded Adama of his hotshot pilot days but still...

Im half way through the second series again and the entire emotional saga of these two male figures is a joke. Helo and the Virus... Apollo in the latest season 3 episodes . Bad bad soliders

Got to be honest, did not expect this level of agreement. I expected someone would bit my head off for being nasty. Well, this makes me feel good about being me.

Pepe is right, Starbuck and Apollo need a slap. I expect this kind of silly carry on in the "OC" or "One Tree Hill", because that's the premise of that show, (as the "Onion" puts it, "beautiful people hurting each other") but in a show whose selling point is that it's the "gritty, realistic" sci fi show for grown ups? No, it's juvenile and inconsistent with the rest f the show. It's like bits of Laguna Beach interspersed with Battlestar.

Plus, this is going to sound weird, but I think they need more plain people in the show. On a real aircraft carrier, not all the crew look like they've been carved from marble, some of them have beer bellys, or big noses, or hairy eyebrows. I like chief Tyrol because he's not stereotypically "handsome", he looks like a real person. Cally too, because she's not "hot" in a big chest blonde hair kind of way (don't get me worng, she's a very pretty woman)

My girlfriend fancies Tyrol . I was subject to a google search of Apollo's man-arms and Tyrol's cutie little face last night. I retaliated with a google image search "tricia helfer legs" .


The love aspect plays a big role in the show and its a bit irritating after a while

I think even the OC would be hard pushed to find a group of people who cant seem to keep their privates under wraps for a few weeks on a big ship. Battlestar Galactica or The Love Boat? I think we even have the Ethnic bartender in the third series.

In short, less love ... more capital ship battles ! Its WAR people.. not Pride and Prejudice

Her character is sort of depressing... If i was Lee i would be happier with Dee.. jaysus their names even match Lee and Dee

Anyway hopefully she will sort herself out and go kick some Cylon ass.
I wonder what will happen when they get to earth.. hopefully not travel back in time and all the crap they did in the original.

I've been re-watching S1 and S2 and her character is great in these two seasons. Perfect balance of nutjob, hardass and girly-girl. Refreshingly three dimensional character.

Her writing is a bit wonky in S3 though.

I think she is perfect as she is, if she was a bloke we wouldn't be having this conversation.
I reckon they got the character just right, plenty of depth, a maverick, no top gun pun intended, someone damaged by her childhood and someone whose head has been royally screwed up by the Cylons on New Caprica.
And the whole love/hate thing with Lee, sure that just real life, you can't always get what you want and when you do, its not always how you thought it would be.
Anyway, I reckon that a lot of sci fi nuts find realistic female characters scary and would rather retreat to the comic book stylings of Xena for their kicks. Just an opinion of a sci fi nut, I happen to be marries to a strong woman, who also is called Kara.

Funnily enough, i can't stand 99% of the characters on Battlestar. I absolutely despise Apollo and i really dislike starbuck, i hate the president so much it sometimes hurts.

Actually i hate everyone except ...

Love -> Bill Adama, Saul Tigh. - They are just pure class bottled and aged like a good wine. Adama and Tigh seem to be the only characters that have a pair of balls between them, As far as i'm concerned they're the only two real soldiers left alive.

Really Like -> Sharon (The previously preggers one), Tyrell, Anders, Hotdog. All good characters and good actors. Annoying at times but you can't be perfect.

Like -> Baltar, Caprica 6, Cat.

Apollo is the dictionary definition of "whiney annoying prat". Can't stand him. Starbucks not far behind, when she "died" i knew it wasn't permanent because i'm not that lucky to be rid of her.
