From rte.ie/business. Good stuff at last. Shame it can't be implemented sooner though
Aer Lingus has confirmed that it will begin services to three new cities in the US before the end of the year, following agreement on an 'open skies' deal between the European Union and the US.

The airline's new routes are to San Francisco, Orlando and Washington, with the San Francisco service expected to start in October.

EU transport ministers unanimously approved the draft agreement at a meeting in Brussels earlier.

The deal will also see the phasing out of the Shannon stopover.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has welcomed the decision.

Mr Ahern said that it will be good for Aer Lingus and for the country.

Ruu, I need to fly to Orlando at the end of October. Do you think Aer Lingus will be operating this route by then. I would prefer to use Aer Lingus because they will carry sporting equipment for free for anyone who is a member of the national team and shipping bikes is expensive. I want to fly home from San Fran and have no problem finding this route on the wer lingus website but I can't find any mention of Orlando.

Expect a lot of interaction with the cabin crews on that one.

A lot will depend on the talks currently in progress between EI and the Unions.

Stopover duration and crewing levels will be the crunch issues.

Hunnymonster, I have heard that the Washington and Orlando route will start in December or early next year. Only San Fran will start in October!:(

From what I hear only SFO is the first to be running, the others will follow with time (as Aer Lingus have to wait for the aircraft to be delivered too to serve these destinations). It's probably way too soon for them to be listed on the website yet, considering it's only just been announced.

There San Francisco flight you're finding on their website is actually not a direct flight, but one to Chicago/LAX with a connection onwards with American Airlines.
