Would need a bit more info on what sort of area you are trying to cover to say . Also certain types of omnis can blow certain types of wireless cards.

Besically plan is to put it up on the house and connect to whatever wierless networks are around the local area. The wider the area the better i suppose. :) I was presuming id need to get a wireless pci card with an aerial connection?

The problem with using it to connect to your friends networks are that it will also pick up noise from 360* too.
You will need it , a length of co-ax , a wireless card and a pigtail ( to go between the coax and the wireless card)

can anybody suggest a cheaper alternative to the above?

    Thanks

    :)
This is a free alternative [bar printing costs of a template from the uploader's site].

Thanks for the reply, the house is being built at the moment so i thought it might be the time to put up a permenent aerial but do you guys think a focused aerial sticking out the velux would be better as it wouldnt pick up as much interference? Or the the omnidirectional one the best bet for a permanet fixture?

Is this for wifi? The signal loss per unit length of cable between the antenna and the adapter will be too high for that idea I would suspect. Near to or greater than the gain of the antenna. Also with an omni directional antenna as was said you'll get much more noise but also the transmitted signal well not be focused and will have a much shorter range.

you'd want a directional antenna and have the wireless adapter as close to it as possible. Unless I'm seriously misunderstanding what you are trying to do.

The coating on some windows will reduce the signal by a fair amount.
What you are actually looking for is a directional antenna with a rotator and a single board pc with wireless card you can put near the antenna so you don't suffer much cable loss .
This will do exactly what you want .

Ok guys thanks for the input. Is there such a thing as a directional antenna with a rotator on it i can buy without spending a fortune?

I suppose watty or anyone else into radio gear would be the man to ask about rotators , as for the rest ...
    cheapish antenna ~ e60
    radio/sbc to mount near it ~ e85
add box , bit of outdoor cat5 and a PSU etc
