Just saw this on zap2it (spoiler bits are for those not uptdate with the US airings):
With only two episodes remaining in its second season, "Prison Break" has received an early pick-up from FOX.

The third season renewal for "Prison Break" probably isn't much of surprise, given that the drama has had a solid year, helping FOX win its time period in a variety of key demographics including adults 18-34 and men 18-49, while finishing a consistent second overall 18-49.

The show has averaged 9.1 million viewers per week.

After a first season spent watching Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), Lincoln Burroughs (Dominic Purcell) and a group of their convict allies breaking out of jail, "Prison Break" has dedicated its second season to watching those same convicts on the run, being hunted down by a many-tentacled vast government conspiracy.
Specific details for the third season are vague, though as the second finale approaches on Monday, April 2, certain possibilities are coming into focus. Michael and Lincoln reached Panama during last week's episode, but just as freedom seemed like a real possibility, Michael ditched his brother and headed off to Panama City in search of the nefarious T-Bag (Robert Knepper), setting the stage for international intrigue.

"Prison Break" is expected to continue shooting in the Dallas area next season with second unit work in Florida and Louisiana.

    Fox locks up more 'Prison'
    Show rewarded for good behavior
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDERFox has sentenced "Prison Break" to another year of hard primetime.
That clears the series through the 2007-08 TV season, the show's third. Skein was rewarded for good behavior, having won its slot in adults 18-34 and come in second with adults 18-49.

Exec producer Paul Scheuring said his team had been proceeding with this year's season finale cliffhanger and had already mapped out much of season three when they received the firm pickup Tuesday.

"We already knew where we were going," he said. "Most of the major players are returning, but it will be a reconceptualization again, just like it was in season two."

"Prison Break," from 20th Century Fox TV and Adelstein-Parouse Prods., launched in 2005 as a drama about a man (Wentworth Miller) who stages a bank robbery in order to land in prison, where he believes his brother (Dominic Purcell) has been wrongfully convicted of killing the vice president's brother.

The two staged their escape at the end of season one; this year, they've been on the lam -- and hunting for $5 million hidden by famed skyjacker D.B. Cooper.

Season three's storyline will expand internationally; the show also plans to add at least four new cast members -- two men, two women, none American. Casting likely will take place in May.

"The scope of the show will play on a much more global scale," Scheuring said.

"Prison Break" will continue to shoot in Dallas next season (having moved there this year after filming the season one prison-set episodes outside of Chicago). But crews will spend more time shooting in Florida and Louisiana, Scheuring said.

Season to date, "Prison Break" has averaged 9.1 million viewers and a 3.7 rating/10 share in adults 18-49. Scheuring, Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal Moritz and Brett Ratner exec produce.

Pretty much just a repeat of what was said above, but I'll put in it spoiler tags just in case.
Fox has confirmed that a third season of Prison Break is in the works.

"It essentially will be a new chapter," explained creator and executive producer Paul Scheuring. "It's going to return to the fundamental conceit, to the roots of what the show was about."

Precise details about what season three will entail are being kept under wraps but Scheuring has indicated that both Wentworth Miller (Michael) and Dominic Purcell (Lincoln) will return for at least the initial episodes of the new run. Options on the actors involved come up for renewal in May and more details are expected then.

Production on season three will be based in Dallas, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with auxiliary locations in Florida and Louisiana.

Prison Break, which wins its timeslot in the adults 18-49 demographic, joins Bones and House among Fox shows receiving relatively early renewals. The show airs on Mondays at 10pm on Five in the UK.

Kristin at E! talks about a rumour of where the story could be headed for Season 3 and it sounds like it could work if they decide to take that direction.

I'd recommend avoiding the article though because if it's true then it very much spoils the end of Season 2.

Wasn't Prison Break initially meant to be a one season show? I was surprised to learn about a second season... let alone a third!

It was originally only have a series, then a full series, now it has grown again. IMHO it hasn't dropped in quality yet

Thats exactly what I was thinking, as long as the 3rd season is as solid as the first 2 seasons then we will have nothing to worry about unless the writers rest on their laurels and just blow it...which I doubt it.

On the extra disc on the season one box set there was an interview with someone I can't remember who said that when Scheuring first came up with the idea for PB "he had five or six seasons planned out".
The person could have been exaggerating but he definitley said it.

I saw that as well. Personally I think that Prison Break is 1 of the best programs on TV, if not the best, if it means that they only plan 6 episodes in advance that's ok with me. Whereas I watch Lost as well, that seems very drawn out, and that's only 1 season ahead of Prison Break (I think).

Very few programs can keep it going anymore, ever some of the most popular programs of all time jumped the shark well before it was finished.

    Just my 2 cents

Can anyone ease my mind about the rumors that Wentworth Miller won't be playing Michael in season 3?? I didn't want to look anything up in case I ruin season 2 for myself.

Think it's fairly safe to say Wentworth Miller will be back playing Michael Scofield in Season 3...

... in all his handsomeness.. smug bastard! :D

Quick Tip: best leave the thread after reading this as you probably shouldn't be in a thread divulging details on the new season when you haven't even seen the season that precedes it yet. People have a tendency to be a bit light on the spoiler tags as of late.

If, as some people above have posted, the original plan was for 5 seasons then he is probably tied into a contract for all of that. I can't see it working if they change the actor for the central character.

Will do...now I'm off to watch eppy 16. William Fichtner is such a brilliant addition to the show!

To be honest, I don't think it would be much good if they changed the main character. I hope they don't. It might just turn me off watching it, but then again roll on season 3:D .

scofield is the main charactor!! they actually couldnt kill him off!! whats the point in watching the show then!
