This came up recently in a dicussion with friends and I wasn wondering it anyone here coudl point me inthe right direction as my googlefu is failing on this one.

Anointing is done is several different religions for different rites, anointing with oil being the most commmon.

In terms of christainity there is the anointin with chrism at baptism, confirmation and during last rites, also in catholicism there is the smudging/aniointing with ashes on ash wednesday.

All of the chirstain anointing seems to be done with the thumb of the person ( usually the priest ) administering.

Is there a reason for this ?

None that I know of, except that it is easier.

Baptisms are done with holy water as blessed by a priest in my church.

The christian baptism includes the anointing as well as the blessing with water.
