Optimal Starting Stack?

I'm in the early stages of planning a 3/4 day festival for later this year.
ME will be either 500 or 550 game (max reg 50).

In your opinion what starting stack is too large?

I was thinking 25k, 30 min blinds, full blind structure.

    Your thoughts, please.

For a 500 euro game, 2-3 days is enough. 25k might be a bit much tbh, I dunno... I dont want to spend my ENTIRE life playing poker :)

    DeV.

25K is a bit sick... with the WSOP being 20K this year maybe do it along those lines for people to get used to them??

Why not increase clock instead of chips? 10k and 1hr clock

    Hi FBD,

I am also thinking about this option.

I guess my real question should have been is there any merit in a tournament with extra chips but full blind structure, would you need to adjust your style with more and more players throwing chips into pots?

I didn’t play in the GPJ festival last November but know that the starting stack was 15k. What is the general consensus on this amount for a starting stack?

    I think a 15k and a 40min clock would be nice.

Are you sure?? Everywhere seems to be saying $10,000 again.

The clock is much more important than the starting stack in this kind of tournament. I think there's very little difference between a 10k stack and a 15k if the blinds are only 30 minutes. As the Green Joker Poker main event showed, a 15k stack with a one hour clock leaves a lot of room for play.

i wanted to make this point a while ago but never got around to it, I agree with FBD and marq, the starting stack actually makes much less difference than the clock.

From my recent tournament expereriences I never want to play a tournament again with a clock of 30 mins or less. 45 is ok, an hour is good. I played the team event recently somewhere in the country, and the tournament turned into a joke a few hours in.

We started with 200 blinds each, then after 30 mins later they doubled. So for the first little while it was a great tournament with really interesting hands and a place for skilled players to be creative. By the time we got down to 50 players left the average stack was around 5 blinds, I would of actually preferred not to waste my time in the early levels trying to do well in a tournament that was going to develop into the poker equivalent of monkeys throwing faeces at each other!

I got to meet sideshow bob though so it wasnt all bad. The tournament was well run apart from that.

I've just woken my wife with my LOL.

    Never heard it better described.

JP, time permitting - go with 15k and Ihr levels a la the GJP ME. That would be an amazing game.

Otherwise, you could maybe look at the structure Neill Kelly is going to use for his 3 day €550 game in May. Avoid levels less than 1hr.

    Sounds good whatever you do.

    Hi Lloyd,

I have been looking around at different structures and have to say the Big slick structure is excellent.

the SE got it spot on the first monthly 200 game they ran.

attached is the structure we all agreed here on boards. it was designed as a 1 day game for roughly 80 players. The FT was broken at 5/6am and had to come back the next day because the start time was pushed back to 7pm (not 2pm as scheduled in spreadsheet). If you increased stack to say 15k and made it 1hr levels you would have a great structure. Very similar to the GJP game.
