Does anyone know of a higher capacity DVD that will let me record a 6Gb video file to one disc without reducing the picture quality?

    Thanks!

Dual/double layer discs will do the job. 8.5gig capacity.

Your writer must support dual layer burning though.

Get a Dual layer DVD disc. They are 8.5gb. Make sure your burner supports them first though.

    Cheers!

How do I find out if my writer will take them? Dual layer isnt written on the DVD drawer.

Nor on mine but it was a feature listed in the product description when I bought it.

Find your drive's model number and Google it.

if you have nero installed it has an info tool under its program group on the start menu this will tell you all the formats the drive can read and write to.

You can also use the freeware VSO Inspector same deal as Nero Info Tool.

Run it & look under write features for DVD+R DL support.

Ignore DVD-R DL doesn't work on most DVD players whereas DVD+R DL does because of bitsetting it can change it's ID to DVD-ROM & most DVD players interpret it as a factory pressed dual layer DVD9.

But with DVD-R DL it has no such feature and shows as DVD-R & DVD players do not expect a layer break with DVD-R (DVD-5) so it wont play it properly, you would have to find a player that specifically supports DVD-R DL.

Sorry for jumping in but I'm not 100% sure about what that nero Info is saying. Took a screenshot (attached) does it mean I can burn dual-layer? And how much do dual layer dvd's cost etc? Where do you buy them?

The DL bit in the type section would indicate that it can burn Dual Layer dvds. You can buy them in any decent place that sells blank discs, they are a bit more expensive than regular DVD+R though iirc.

    Yes it does.
The link in my previous post will give you an idea of where and how much.

Bingo.. Went into Device Manager, noted down my DVD drive part number and looked it up.

Its an NEC ND-3530A, and according to this page,

    http://www.nec.co.jp/products/optical/en/ND-3530A/index.shtml

"ND-3530A is a half-height optical drive with 16x write speed that supports DVD plus, minus formats and DVD+R double layer disc."

    Excellent. Thanks for the help!
