Problem receiving some channels on SKY

I have 2 Sky boxes in the house. One downstairs, one upstairs. The upstairs one is working fine, the downstairs one went on the blink yesterday.

I can receive some channels (142, 501, 415) but not others (101,102,etc). On the channels that are not coming through I can see the programme information (time of programme, next programme, etc) but it shows an error.

Can't remember text extactly, but the error numbers are 25 and 30, one is something like "Technical Fault" and the other "Signal Fault".

I rang Sky, eventually got talking to a Scottish guy (strong accent!). He tried a few things with me - nothing worked, so they have to sent out a service engineer. It costs €100 - because I am out of warranty by 1 week.

The weather has been fairly rough here recently so I reckon maybe the dish or the cable coming out of it has has moved ? (but it's funny that one box is working fine)

Don't really want to pay €100 if at all possible....anyone had similar problems ? Or is a Sky installer who wants €50 into the hand !!?

You should have argued the €100 fee since you're only 1 week over. Threaten cancellation (works for many).

If other box is workign OK, I'd imagine the dish is OK (that said though, some tuners can be more sensitive than others). What does the Signal Quality meter say?

It could be either cable or a faulty box.

This might seem like a stupid question, but I assume you've unplugged the box for a few minutes, then reconnected it and checked?
Reason I ask is my own Sky+ box does the same thing as you describe from time to time, but a full reboot in this manner clears it.

I doubt it's a dish issue as the other box works fine. I'd be similarly surprised if it was a cable problem unless there's a lot of play in it? Generally they secure them pretty good.

    signal strength around 60%
    signal quality around 70%

both boxes are about the same - just going by the little graph on screen.

I have rebooted the box (following instructions from Sky on phone)

I said I didn't want to pay the fee and would rather go with Chorus...didn't really want to push it too hard as Sky is the only thing available where I am. I got them as a last resort !!
