Are all text messages stored by Operator?

Does anyone if a copy of all text messages relayed by an operator are stored, i.e. can the Gardai upon request get a copy of messages sent?

I believe that Irish law states all electronic communication has to be stored for 3 years but others tell me the messages aren't stored?

    Thanks

AFAIR they do keep a record but it is very hard to get a copy of them even if the gardai request them!!

Text messages are stored for a maximum of 7 hours, then permanently deleted.

are you sure its not 3 years the same as call records?

do you want the number the text was sent to? thats kept for 30 days on prepay and permanently on bill, if youre looking for the actual text itself its not kept at all the phone companies have no access to the content of the text just the number it was sent to

Not sure how long operators keep texts for but it is possible to recover deleted texts from a sim card with the right equipment/software - just google recover sms or undelete sms or forensic sms.

Yes but are the actual contents of the call stored? No is the answer and I think the same applies with SMS. The record of the SMS is kept (would be done so via billing records and/or an MIS system) but the actual contents of the SMS is not afaik.

    that does seem more likely

Yeah, pretty much as you were all alluding to.....the text of the message itself is only stored periodically. Once a CDR has been written for that message its slice of memory can be re-allocated for another incoming message.....since the memory available can be large and depending on amount of traffic passing through the SMSC ,message text can be viewed for anywhere between 24 - 48 hours maybe a little while longer in some cases.

Operators do though have to store this CDR for the period specified by the regulator.
