i.e. in windows if i select an icon and hold shift and then click an icon 5 icons to the left then all 6 are selected. how is the same operation performed in Mac OS X?

    Thanks.

Select one icon, then hold down the Shift key while selecting the next.

Never found a way of doing that. I just mouseHold-drag-select them all.
Isn't as annoying as "Cut" missing in Finder tho.

It works in List and Column view in Finder. It doesn't work in Icon view, shift-click works identically to command-click there. The Desktop is always in Icon view.

Ah, that would explain it. I ALWAYS use Icon view while browsing

In finder, open Preference, under the General tab click Open new windows in column view. All new windows you open then should be in column view.
