Mac Mini or Apple tv

This may sound like a silly question but i've been toying with the idea of an apple tv, but can't seem to justify the purchase. Firstly i know the movies aren't available on the irish iTunes store. Also it seems to be a glorified media streamer. Would i not be better picking up a second hand Mac Mini and stick that under my tv. Then with "Bonjour" i could share music, pic's etc and also stick it on home network to go on the web and go browsing if the mood takes me. Also, having a DVD slot would mean i can just stick in a DVD and play it, which can't be done with Apple tv.

    What do you guys think?

I think atm a Mac mini will do more for you but looking ahead I think Apple have some plans up their sleeve for Apple TV, see macdailynews.com

Surely there will be a way around this?
Probably not as straight forward as we would like though!

TBH, I have also been thinking about investing in a Mac mini for under the TV, but would rather a second hand intel version(Front row and IR control would be useful!)

The AppleTV will play any video that can be stored and played in iTunes. The latest version of Quicktime Pro will convert DivX videos (if you have the DivX codec installed) into an AppleTV-compatible format (it appears as an output option called "Movie to AppleTV" when you select 'Export').

There is plenty of 3rd-party software that does the same thing. Using Automator, it wouldn't be difficult to whip up an action that would convert the files to the correct format and add them to iTunes by dragging and dropping them on an icon.

Sounds good pa, just toying around with Automator at the moment.

Also, theoretically, the Apple TV can play DivX & Xvid. Its just a scaled down version of OSX, Im sure someone is working on an enabler for it as we speak.. :D

Yep, working already. I'm sure there's an easier method in the works aswell.
