I know most people these days use 1024x768 or even higher than that but does anybody here represent 800x600? I remember the good old days when my monitor was set to 8x6.

    I play BF2 on my laptop (DELL D600, Centrino 1.6, 512 RAM) in 800x600.

I could push it to 1024x768, but... 8x6 is the only way to get acceptable framerates for online play, with no candy at all, everything to low/off, no AA, 75% vis, etc...

Mind you, it is only a 32MB ATI M9 chip  - that the lappie runs it at all is mind-boggling in the first place! :D

EDIT - but I do run it at 1024x768 maxed out on the desktop, with the trusty AMD64/9800XT combo ;)

    800x600 at home in HL2.

    CoD2 and BF2 I could run at 1024x768.
HL1 and mods at above res.
    256Meg 9600XT

In college play games at 16:10 some huge res on a mates laptop.

I like to have the lower settings. Good for getting an idea of how resource-heavy a game can be in certain modes. And there are just very few (read "not belonging to me") machines around that can handle Supreme Commander with all the shinies turned up full...

1280*1024 The curse of having a LCD monitor :(

1280x1024 for a long time, before that I had various secondhand 21" CRTs so it's been a long time since I've run games in 800x600.

    Now: 1920x1200

1680x1050. Games that still don't properly support widescreen resolutions in this day and age truely do suck. I'm looking at you, battlefield 2. Also a very long time since I've used 800x600... Don't think i've used it since back in my Pentium-II days.

Do you not find it hard to see distant players at 640?

I've actually never used 800x600, my first resolution was 1024x768 (only started PC gaming back in 1999, 1024 was the norm back then I guess). I now use 1280x800 for most of my games, except Planetside where I use 1024. That game is four years old and still runs like crap on new PCs ;) . 800x600 is far too small nowdays, with HUD being too big for me to play for most games.

1280x1024 for most things, I never go lower than 1024x768, it's in the past.

I go as low as necessary to get a consistent framerate. That can mean playing in 640x480, but I'd rather be able to see everything that's happening than make it pretty.

yeah, gotta have the framerate... but I'll take the fps-drops over the blurry, crappy, upscaling I'd otherwise have to deal with on my LCD... and it's a widescreen monitor, so it's either pillarboxed or streched out of aspect. :/
    It's not that bad though, I've a decent cpu & gpu :)
Still miss my CRT sometimes :(

I play oldere games on 800 x 600 coz on my widescreen laptop it is like having full screen smoothing. Mafia looks a lot nicer on 800 x 600 on my laptop than on the native 1440 900.

For newer games i would usually have the resolution up high tho.
