Childrens book from early 90's

I know this seems really vague but I was wondering if anyone could hep me out with the name of a book (actually series of books) I used to read as a child.

I can only remember bits and pieces to the series but I remember that I used to love it. The story was about two children (or possibly pinocchio-esque characters) a boy and a girl. They basically lived in an attic, but they didn't know much about themselves. The series of books revolved around them trying to find out who they were and this was set in a lord of the rings type setting, trekking over vast lands, encountering many obstacles in search of their identity. I think there may have been an elderly man or wizard of some sort involved. He knew the children and every now and again would look at his magic saucer which would show him just exactly where the children were.

I know the info is really vague and sketchy. I read the books when I was about 5/6 and that would have been around 1990/1991, they seemed newish for then. Also, I remember that the inside of the book, both front and back showed a map of what land the children had crossed. Each book was small enough in size, about 30 pages and contained pictures.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to know what happened in the end.
