Just wondering how this compares to the ALDI one last week and if its worth €200?

    Lidl Sat Nav

    # Accurate directions with the latest SiRF III GPS
    # Package Includes: MyGuide Navigator 400, Holder, Mains adapter, 12V Car Charger, 256 MB Memory Card, Software DVD, Guarantee Card, Hardware & Software Manual

I think this is the manual for it.. Silverguide4000.pdf

Seems like a better deal than the Aldi one as it has maps for all of europe :)
I like the i-Go mapping software, it's very sleek, plus it can make a log of the route you take to get somewhere and you can save it as a .gpx file and upload it to Google maps via http://utrack.crempa.net/

I wonder if it's using Navteq or TeleAtlas maps? For Ireland, Navteq are currently much more detailed than TeleAtlas.

I was thinking about getting the Silvercrest 4000 for a friend, which is up on 26th in Lidl, but it looks the same as the previous one they had late last year. My cousin bought the Silvercrest 4000, i think it was around Xmas 2006, and it does not seem to name any of the townlands or the country roads. Now i myself bought the one in Aldi last week, and that names, and shows all the townlands and lanes ect. Maybe it has something to do with the Aldi one using Nav-tech & Lidl one using TeleAtlas which has less coverage of the mapping of Ireland. Maybe somebody here might know more on this Silvercrest 4000. or know how to get the townland road names, or if the one on the 26th is using TeleAtlis or Nav-Tech

How do you know if its teleatlas?

I cant find the info anywhere. If its teleatlas i for one wont be buying it.
Ive had a good look and cant seem to get a confirmation of what the maps are based on.

Because the poster in the Lidl shop has a big "TeleAtlas" logo on it

Would the TeleAtlas one be any good for use in France (ie on holidays) ?

There are online versions of the maps available from the following websites:

    Navteq:
    http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submitDur.do?userType=CONSUMER&language=en

    Tele Atlas:
    http://www.teleatlas.com/MapInsight/index.htm

The Sat Nav's in lidl & aldi would be based on 2006 data and might no't be as up-to-date as the data on those websites but it they would be very close.

Well, my house is on both of them ?!?!

I looked briefly through the manual that Trotter linked to above. It makes no mention of any way to buy/get updated maps in the future as far as I can see.

Is it usually possible to buy updated maps when they come out and is that usually worth doing (as opposed to buying a new unit)?

    Any info appreciated.

I compared the Evesham (Aldi) and the Silvercrest (Lidl) last years Vs, and the Aldi one was way ahead of the Silvercrest in mapping, it brought in all of the by-roads & lanes out the country, where as the Silvercrest did not display any of these roads. So now i think i might get the Tom Tom One Vs6 Europe, as it seems to getting good reviews.

So did anyone buy it? What do you think are the maps any good?

I opted for a AA navigator Vive instead for 13euro extra
