UFC question..

Guys, I was flicking around the channels around midnight last night and came across some UFC Highligts show. Now I haven't seen this sort of thing in quite a few years so I left it on out of curiosity for a while until my wife couldn't bare to look at it any more.

On a couple of occasions the fighters grappled each other until 1 was on top and in control. The guy on the bottom couldn't move the upper part of his body or his head. The guy on top then proceeded to elbow him straight down on the skull until he was unconscious.

Now my question is this. Isn't it quite possible the guy on the bottom could get his skull crushed if he is elbowed hard enough? I'm not expert in how hard a blow it takes or a human skull to crush, but I would imagine fractures would be quite common. Or perhaps I am wrong, and because the canvas the fight on has a bit of give in it, it prevents this from happening.

Ah yes Pat Smith(winner) V Scott Morris(loser) UFC 2.I doubt he was In that much danger of damaging his skull because I would say It would take a lot more Force and weight.UFC is different nowdays anyway so that fight would of been stopped after the first few punches

The ufc is a proper sport that is more controlled now-the begining was only a starting point and they learned from it and improved the fights for the fighters safety and for to get the attention of mainstream media.
The other thing is, if you hit someone hard enough your elbow would smash before a skull-skulls are solid bone and quite thick-elbows are solid enough but much smaller than skulls..as kfar as i know no one ever fractured there skull while doing mma...ufc etc...

Is their a risk of serious injury in the UFC or MMA in general? Sure. There are however many rules in place to ensure the safety of the fighters.

It's a combat sport, not a game of golf. Don't expect anything less.

Chris Brennan has definitely had his eye socket cracked. He describes the "uh-oh" of it on his site.

Cheekbones and eye sockets tend to be what go. It would take one hell of a punch or elbow to fracture your skull but it is possible. The skull is fused bone but it has its weak points.

Can't see a punch doing it. I'd say the (relatively weaker) hand bones would go before the skull.

With the elbow, the force is spread out over the larger bones in your arm giving you a much better chance...still though, I think you'd be doing very well. The domed shape of the skull, as well as its thickness, really help to spread out any impact.

    You're such a wimp dardoz. ;) (it's ok...I know him)

Striking downward with the point of your elbow is not allowed and striking to the back of the head (possibly the weakest part but I'm no expert) is also not allowed. This significantly reduces the threat of an injury like that. But hey it's MMA and they don't always follow the rules exactly.
