    Hi all
I'm looking for some advice please.I've an 8 year old girl who'd love to do martial arts. She's fairly active at the moment doing gaelic football and swimming every week.I'm keen on her doing some type of self-defence for obvious reasons. We live in the ballybrack area (southside).Does anybody know any clubs near us and what martial art might be better for her. Thanks for any advice received.

    Hey DFD,

You can find all the info about our Kung Fu for kids classes in Newpark Sports centre Blackrock here:-> http://www.ymaa.ie/kids_club.html

Our classes are full right now but we will have additional classes when our September term begins so we are filling our waiting list at the mo'.

We will also have 3 Kids Summer camps in Loughlinstown (10am-3pm Mon-Fri), we will be offering a limited number of places to those Kids interested in joining our club in September the chance to attend, this way they can get to see what we do before any commitments are made. Click on our contact page if you have any questions and I will be happy to answer them.

(Thanks Paddy, Hope you are well.)

You could try next generation (sorry, don't have url), they're in Loughlinstown, or Fiannagym.com, is in ballaly

They'd be fun. Not sure if they do a kids class though, you'll have to check.

    Hey OP,
There are a few things you should check out when it comes to kids classes IMO, most of them are total common sense.
    1) Is it clean and safe?
    2) Is it fun for the kids
    3) Is the material "child based" (ie. is the guys saying "okay when you're threatened by a biker gang with knives" or something, or is he aiming it at kids) This is much harder to discern.

After that, I'd say no matter what type of MA it is you're daughter will be grand as they're all good pastimes as long as the class is run right and with kids in mind. My own recommendation would be for one of the more sporting arts such as Judo, Boxing, BJJ or some TKD schools. I think the more sporting these are the better they are for kids as they have an interest they get the self defence benefits and get to do a sport at the same time with all of its advantages.

Firhouse has a good kids class www.cleverlittlemonkeys.com
I believe Monkstown Boxing Club has a girls only class http://www.geocities.com/monkstownbc which is rare enough in Boxing.
Lots of Judo around but I don't know Southside!

    Best of luck!
