Problem with Norton

I am using Norton Anti Virus and if I try to open it I get the following error message. "Symantec Integrator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
It is restricting certain web pages that I am trying to view. This happened a couple of weeks ago and I downloaded the following kindly posted by Probe:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2726F32F-D52B-4F84-ACE8-F7FC20195769
That seemed to work last time but not now. Any ideas what this might be and how I can fix it. Should I just uninstall NAV altogether and try something else.
    Cheers

I used a lot of Norton products over the years including the AV and Internet Security right from version 1 up to 2004and they have been buggy to say the least as well as resource hoggers.

My advise fwiw is to ditch Norton I like did some years ago and go for AVG. They do a full suite of protective software – Antivirus, Firewall, and Anti-spyware.

If you want content filtering and you are with Eircom (Using an eircom router) then you could try their guardian service, I found it great with the kids. However, I recently changed my router to a netgear and the guardian service does not work with that. My back up plan was to use my own proxy server with Lansuite with the puresight content filtering.

There are lots of differing opinions about which content filtering & firewalls are the best, this is what I found works for me.

    Cheers

    Thanks for that,
So you think NAV is the problem, nothing else more sinister ? I was afraid there was some horrible virus on my system. I use AVG in work and have never had a problem with it. I am going to uninstall NAV, if it lets me and see what happens.
    Thanks again.

I think that the chances are that Norton is acting up somewhere.

One thing about Symantec is that they have a good online security check and you can do an antivirus check from their site.

    Try it - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

By doing another av check it may ease you mind about viruses.

I've been having a few problems myself of late with Norton. It has crashed a few times with an error from Dr. Watson:

I am being told that CCApp.exe has had fatal errors and must be closed. It's the Norton application that links into your e-mail and other applications for protection. If it crashes, I can't even receive mail. I've also heard that Ccapp.exe is a piece of adware from media.fastclick

In conjunction with that, I am also getting:

"Dr. Watson was unable to attach to the process. It is possible that process exited before Dr. Watson could attach to it. Windows 2000 returned error code = 5. Access is denied."

Norton then closes completely, leaving me unprotected (though some say with Norton, you basically are anyway. smile.gif ). I have found that if I open up the Norton Window, by clicking the icon in the taskbar, it stays open and does not crash. When it does crash I am unable to run it again. I've also then had problems in shutting down my machine, as nothing happens when I try to. I then have to revert to manual shutdown.

I am looking at getting AVG, so that might help, though I've seen both good and bad reviews about it. The same can be said for any piece of software of course. I hear a lot about it, but I see that the free version is very limited and does not give many updates etc. or cover spam and spyware etc. Are people generally using the free or pay versions?

I think there are plenty using the free version, also you can use AVG Anti spyware (limits on it after the trial, like the resident shield is disabled and automatic updates are also disabled but still works well). I am using Anti Vir at the moment and I think it is updated everyday and seems to be doing the trick.

I also use a combination of Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Spyware (for malware/spyware), Anti-Vir for viruses and Comodo Firewall.

I stopped reading at that point. Its brutal. You'd do less harm installing a Virus.

    AVG/AVG Anti spyware/Spybot/Zonealarm. Use firefox.

I am aware of the other AVG products too. They also have a fully combined internet security product, which you pay for, but has all the Spam, Spyware, Virus protection etc.

I use Spybot and Adaware, and I use Firefox now as my browser.

Norton IS 2007 is even a bigger hog than 2006. Left Norton when I got my new rig and now have fewer problems.

Try NOD32, best antivirus I have ever used. Norton is Bloatware and will seriously reduce the speed of your machine.
