This is an interesting article...the woman who helped make it popular hated how commercialized it became...

i think its a great excuse for families to spend time with their mother. its only commercial if you start buying shoite cards and gimmicky crap along with it.

Indeed, of course its a great day but it just seems it is getting more and more of a farce each year.

i would disagree i have to say. Given that we're all "grown" up in my family and all live away from home, its deffo a good reason for a family get together.

Valentines day and christmas is more a farce every year.

It seems to me that every year it is getting more of a farce, i am just saying....when I hear that the creator of Mothers Day is dismayed about the way it all turned out it makes you think...

That's all good and well, but I for one am not turning around to mammy Silverfish and telling her I'm boycotting Mother's Day, as she is a firm believer that I am:
Never too old for a slap. I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it, so help me god.

no one is ever forced to conform for any 'special' day.
if you dont want to buy a card and bunch of flowers for your mum, then dont.

i on the other hand, dont tell my mum i love her often enough, so it gives me an extra excuse to make her feel good.

    now whats wrong with that?

We all want to buy our mothers great things, well at least I do.
Consumers are pressured by advertising and businesses to measure goodwill in terms of presents, says branding expert Jonathan Gabay.

Do we really need to fork out a lot of money to make our mothers feel happy? Surely it is the small things that matter?

We all seem to, as the article says...measure goodwill in terms of expensive presents.

Pick some wild flowers won't cost you anything, she would appreciate!!!

Most of those days ie Christmas, Easter, St Valintines day, Originated from pagan feasts, then got taken over by the Roman Catholic Religion and then now got hyjacked by Hallmark.

Scarcely the 'Roman Catholic' religion - the early Christians took over various saints' days.

They didn't take over Mother's Day, though; that was Mothering Sunday, an English custom where little girls who had been sent out to work as maids, farmgirls, factory workers, etc, traditionally had one day a year when they could go home to be mothered.

I'm right with all those who want to end Mother's Day and all connected with it - just as soon as women get some respect for the work they do. Until then, let's go right on honouring those mothers who wiped our arses, picked us up from Sutton Cross at 3am on a Saturday morning after working a double shift, helped us with our French homework and advised us on our first love.

Damn right! I tried that when I was 13 and it wasn't worth the hassle.

Don't get me wrong, I get her random shít during the year but I don't feel I should need to on some made up occasion. She does though so I do.

When is it this year anyway?

    Re Christian Saints dates.
All Saints day was introduced by Pope Gregory in 837. it was a pagan festival prior to that. 25th December also came from another pagan festival from Sol the sun god, At the time when our lord was born there was shepheards out in the fields which would have suggested the summer.

At Easter, Our lord was Crucified on the Wedensday and rose on the Saturday (Sabbath) as he was "three days & three nights in the ground" . The Good Friday to Easter Sunday (which makes up only two days) came from the Roman Catholic Religion.

And yes Mothers day is another commercialised Rip off like every other festival.

In response to the generic feminist non-opinion comment: Duh of course we shall get rid of fathers' day too, would you be in favour of getting rid of both?

I think that the fact that it is a Hallmark (tm) holiday says it all. It's nice to appreciate someone for all that they have done for you. But I don't think we should do it only once a year...

    We are being ripped off.

There is currently no cure and the only treatment is to live a farcical life.

I have to make a fuss about wifey. We have a 3 YO and she is nearly two weeks overdue with child number two.

She loves making a fuss at Father's Day but I couldn't care less about it to be honest.

Cheers dude. It actually wasn't a fakepost ; I've been a bit removed from things recently and didn't know it was today. Read your post earlier and was able to get things sorted.

The problem is everything is turned into a consumerfest these days. You can celebrate the day without buying extra stuff.

^^yes, why are people moaning'about it being a rip off, when they are not forced to buy thing. My Mam appreciates the acknowledgment, and is adamant we don't spend any money on her for this day. She had a nice breakfast in bed with some daffodils on the side.
