I am completely clueless when it comes to music stuff so I need some advice please...

I need to buy something for recording music as a present, trouble is I have no idea what I am looking for...

The person the present is for has an electric, amp & effects pedal board but has been saying he would like to get something for recording....

I saw this one on waltons.ie:
    http://waltons.ie/shop/product_info....ducts_id=10655

Is this a good one? Is that a good price for that sort of thing? Would I need to buy anything (leads etc to go with it?)
    Can anyone suggest anything better?

Any advice anyone can offer would be great!
    Thanks!

That Boss unit seems ok. It comes with a small memory card that won't hold much, and the cards are expensive enough to buy. Also the person will need a way to burn a cd for the final product.

Is the personal computer literate with access to a decent P.C.? If so I would strongly consider a good soundcard with bundled recording software instead. This will provide more bang for the buck, as the software will be more sophisticated (midi recording, virtual instruments, powerful mixing environment, etc.).

He is grand with computers and has a pretty decent laptop....

What would i need to get to go with the soundcard for him?
Can you recommend any? What sort of price range would I be looking at?

Also I saw this Zoom one on another website
    http://www.perfectpitchmusic.ie/multitrack.htm
It seems to have a CD burner built in... is that any good? Sorry if i'm coming accross as really thick with all this but its all a whole new kettle of fish to me....

    Thanks!

    What's your budget?

    I just recommended this soundcard

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/tascam_us_122_l.htm

    And this mic:

    And get these headphones too

To be honest, software recording via PC is so much easier than hardware recording. And with Thomann, they'll deliver to your door for free.

Telepaul's recommendation looks like a good laptop solution and it comes with recording software.
