Any ideas what software can be used to get good quality. Tried fraps free version and went into windows movie maker afterwards trying to put a video together but got nowhere. Quality was really poor.

The video quality from Fraps should be fine, I'd say Movie maker is messing you up. You can get a free 30 day trial of premiere pro from adobe.com but be careful it may have issues if you use the Fraps codec.
Vdub is a good free alternative.

Fraps should be fine use something like AutoMKV or Nero Recode to convert into H.264 video or even XviD and it will be much higher quality.

If you are stuck with what settings to use just ask though the easiest way is to just pick a target file size in mind and go from there.
