I did my lessons with Fingal County Councils Star Rider Programme and found it to be excellent. I had been riding for around 15 years though when I did it. I cant remember how much it cost but it was good crack as well as being informative. You are dead right to do it straightaway. There are so many guys bombing it around on bikes who dont know how to brake effectively or even how to maintain a machine. It makes more sense to spend the money now rather than later.

I got the test first time and had a clear sheet. This was even though the speedo cable snapped on the bike a couple of days beforehand and I had to guess my speed (you get marked down for driving too fast or too slow).

The test isn't difficult if you've done the preparation (like alot of things I suppose). To give you an idea I would say that its easier than a car test.

You dont have to have any minimum amount of hours done to sit the test but in my opinion you wouldn't have a hope of passing it without formal training.

I jotted down some notes of what the test involved and will post them up here if anyones interested. Its handy to have the full licence because you can always rent a bike and go for a rip when your abroad on hols.

Yes of course you can do it but I think that to get the most benefit from the course, it would be good if you had the basics and were capable of driving on the open road. One guy who was on my course was only just about able to ride so they had to scale it back to his level. Obviously they couldn't then bring him to the same level that they did for the participants who had more experience so he didn't get as much value from the course.

They will group participants into similar skill levels so that nobody feels held back (or pushed too hard).
