Dead PC

I bought a PC from Ankermann back in January and everything was going great until a couple of days ago when I switched it off with the soft switch on the front of the case. It will not power up now. I thought it was a faulty switch so I have transferred the guts to another case and it still will not power up. There is not a budge out of it and no lit led on the motherboard. What should I do?

Is it likely to be the power supply unit? How do I tell if a psu is faulty? I do not want to ship the whole box back to Germany if the problem can be fixed here.

I would appreciate any tips on possible action.

When you saying not powering up, do you mean there is nothing at all??

No fans on the cpu or in the case and no motherboard RAM light?

Dead as a dodo it is. Nothing powering up at all.

I assume you've checked the obvious..

Different power lead, different wall socket. Switch at back of PC power supply if there is one.

Yes I have tried different leads, different sockets and switching the psu as well. All to no avail. How do I check if the psu works?

Try short circuiting the PSU. First, have the PSU turned off, then with a small piece of wire, connect any one of the black pins to one of the green pins on the 20/24 pin connector that goes to your motherboard. This will fool the PSU into thinking it should be activated ( great for running things off of the molex plugs ). Now plug the PSU back in and turn it on at the back. If the PSU fan runs then your PSU is fine and your mobo is fried.

If you've got a multimeter... check the following.

Black probe to case or black wire where the PSU connects to motherboard
And red probe to each one after the other.. Orange, red, and yellow wires.
You should get reading of around 3.3v, 5v, and 12 volts respectively.

This will tell you if the PSU is putting out the correct voltages.

Thanks for your help. I shorted the pins and the psu did not work. I bought a new psu in Maplins and installed it and everything is now working fine.
