Just wondering how multiroom is monitored. ie., whats to stop you getting multiroom and giving the box to your friend he plugs in his phone line and he gets same channells as you and overall yee split the cost?

Surely Sky have monitoring systems for this?

Mods I'm not promoting this idea but merely asking how/if its monitored

Both boxes have to be on the same phoneline.

i.e. on Metro or ISDN, even the same socket via a splitter.

but the box makes the call. so how to they know the phone number of the line the box was calling on? caller id maybe, but what if line is ex directory.
I dont understand how sky can know the number of the line unless its id is shown?

SKY will charge you for 2 full box rentals if you are ex-directory. You must restore caller ID to your phone to use Multiroom at the discounted price.

i know some neighbours that share there dish with each other. I think 3 of them have one sub with 2 multiroom recievers. The dish is on the middle house and 3 feeds to each house. as far as i know their recievers are not wired up to the phonelines. This phoneline thing stopped me getting sky when i moved house as I have voip now through cable BB. Sky wouldnt allow me to get sky installed with out phoneline for the latest offers. So I never bothered with phone line rental and went with cable. suppose I could plug a sky box into my voip connection?

If it's ex-directory you have to go into the into the "hidden" installer menu and put "142" into the dialing pre-fix.

It might work. Try a fax machine or PC dialup modem. It depends on how your cable provider has implemented the phone service.

I don't think they really need to to know the caller ID actually. The way it works relies on both boxes failling to dial at one time and both succeeding at two other different times. Caller ID can be too easily faked.

They do believe me. I have 2 boxes and I got a nice letter not once but twice telling me that there seems to be a problem with my connection. I had the 2 boxes connected to a phone line - my no. is ex-directory. So I put the "142" prefix in on the "telephone settings" option on the installer menu. It does a callback automatically when you do this and it worked.

Changed my phone number, moved to smart telecom andno problems with sky. the actual number must not matter if they both call from the same number.
