I have a standard semi-detatched house with a garage. I am thinking of converting garage into a room. Do I need to apply for planning permission for this?

is the garage attached to the house, or is it in anyway a separate structure.
If it is attached and the external of the structure isnt changing then you dont need planning,
exemption from planning is dependent on a number of factors, and its best to double check with county council, but you should be fine.

Most likely it is exempt. The main requirement is that the floor area is less than 40 sq, metres and providing that the house has not been previously extended.

As Mellor said check with the local council.

just watch the floor to ceiling height as there are requirements re height : the others are right u should not need planning permission but make sure u dont build something that does not comply with the building regs, which apply regardsless of planning

Ring the local county council planning section. They'll have a better idea
