Cate Blanchett signs on to do Indy 4

Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of Indy 4 most likely as Indy's wife. And so ends the speculation that Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Ark would return. Mixed feelings about this one. I like Blanchett a lot. Great actress. But I'd liked to have seen Marion return. To give the series a little more continuity. Marcus Brody wont be back as Denholm Elliott is dead and it doesn't look like Sallah will be back either.

    Thoughts and musings?

    Oh yeah, linky- comingsoon.net

Contrary to most I hated Last Crusade, apart for Sean Connery/River Phoenix and John Williams score. Watching it now exposes how painfully contrite the scenes are, for example the scenes with the Zeppelin look terrible, and illogically plotted - punching Gestapo in Berlin onto luggage and the Zeppelin getting miles away, planes easily accessible to passengers on the bottom of the Zeppelin, with cars waiting for them with engine running right beside the area they crash after the tail is shot off, German pilots flying into tunnels (?) for comedy value..and tonnes of other scenes throughout which show how badly plotted the whole thing is. Its a pity really, I find it unwatchable now, whereas Raiders of the Lost Ark with a Lawrence Kasdan/George Lucas screenplay is fantastic. At least Temple of Doom, though badly plotted, tried to make things a bit darker.
So my hope for part 4 are less than optimistic.

Its a pity Sallah wont be in it. I think he's a great character.

pfft.. Isn't Cate Blanchett a little young to play indy's wife? Let's face it Harrison Ford looks ancient at this stage. I had my doubts about this film before, but now its sounds like it's just going to be a cash in for Lucas and a final paycheck for Ford.

Yay to Cate Blanchett. Probably the finest actress of the past 10 years!

Can't see anything negative about her being added to the Indy IV cast!

Why a cash in for Lucas? That gets thrown about far too readily about anything he's involved with. He doesn't need a cash in, he has more than enough money. The reason Indy IV wasn't made years ago is because the three people mainly involved with it (Spielberg, Lucas and Ford) wanted the quality to be high. They don't give a **** how much money it's going to make as long as it makes back their costs.

Cate Blanchett may look a bit strange as his wife, but then it stands to reason that somebody like Indy who refuses to grow up may have found himself a younger wife. Alternatively, Blanchett has the acting chops to play somebody older.

I enjoyed all three films but I do agree with this, the Raiders script was excellent, so much better than it needed to be. Crusade is very funny in places (anything with Connery and Ford is gold) but overall I don't like the direction they took. Part of what really separates Raiders also I believe is that I don't think Kasdan realised he was writing a b-movie and put a lot more effort into it then he might of done. He wasn't pleased with the finished film and subsequently became very eager to start directing himself. The script for TOD was cobbled together from the ideas they couldn't fit into Raiders and Crusade was just a rehash imo.

I've never been too impressed with anything David Koepp has written so I don't have much hope for the Indy 4 script either.

Interesting. I'm surprised he didn't like it but then again sometimes when you're so close to a project you don't get to see the finished atricle with fresh eyes, witness (he he) Harrison Fords negative views on the brilliant Blade Runner.
Yes the 'running behind the gong' scene was definitely meant to be in Raiders. Funny that TOD is completely uncut whenever they show it on RTE, you can see the hand enter the chest and everything! Yet my limp Region 2 DVD doesn't have that and other shots.
I suppose what annoyed me was more to do with people saying "Crusade is a return to the form of Raiders", when its nowhere near it whatsoever. The overall effect of Crusade is more like a Roger Moore James Bond film.
