Geographical point of note..Las Vegas is in Nevada, not California ;)

As for California..SF is definitely a good place to and spend some time. Lots to do in it and surrounding areas. Definitely me favourite west coast city.

Los Angeles is my favourite American City....

few points of interest for you below perhaps!

If you arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), get out of it quickly. Its not the most prettiest of airports and head straight for Santa Monica.

You definitely need to check out Santa Monica and the old Santa Monica pier with the Ferris wheel, one of the last remaining seaside amusement parks in the US. From here you can take a walk (or rollerblade!) down the boardwalk on Venice Beach and see the guys pump iron in the outdoor gym. We rented bikes and it is a handy way to see everything.

Follow the interstate highway up to Pacific Palisades and Malibu all teh way up to Santa Barbara.

Back in LA, check out the HOLLYWOOD SIGN from Mulholland Drive and go on the tour bus to check out some of the celebrity homes in the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills area. Gawk at some of the incredible mansions in Bel-Air....Cruise Sunset Boulevard and wind up in Hollywood & Highland to check out the Walk of Fame, Mann's Chinese Theatre and the Kodak Theatre(where the Oscars take place). Universal Studios is also close by. Must see is Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard for the incredible high fashion outlets... they wouldnt let me in!! Ha ha ha, but well worth seeing and peering in the windows. Oh yeah, you can also get stunning pictures of the Hollywood Sign from the top of the Hollywood and Highland complex for a great view.

Party the night away Santa Monica, West Hollywood and you may alos spot the odd celebrity having an Apple Martini in the corner!!

Give me a PM if you need any more specific info about Los Angeles, maps, directions addressed etc!
    Cheers,
    Mike

On your way back up from San Diego or Vegas I would take a slight detour and visit Yosemite national park.

Drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, the Big Sur is spectacular. Hearst Castle near San Simeon is well worth a visit, and I concur with cousin_borat on Yosemite.

I'm doin pretty much the same as the OP in september. Goin driving from Vegas->San Diego->LA->San Fran. Just wondering if someone can give me a ball park figure of how much we will pay for a nights accomodation. Nothin too fancy, there's three of us and we'll happily share a room. Only thing we want is that its clean.

Hotel cost will very. Why not get your map, go to hotels.com and do some research, looking at places you're going to stop of at. Then check tripadvisor.com to see what others have thought of the hotels in question.
