Not gonna get a Wii

I spent a long time standing in front of the Wii display this evening humming and hawing, going back and forth on whether to buy one or not. And I've pretty much decided that not only will I not buy one at the moment, I really can't see myself buying one at all.

My problem with the Wii appears to be everybody else's usp: the whole motion sense thing. It strikes me as a complete gimmick; that it's been tacked onto cross-console games that look and play better on the 360; that there's nothing original using the Wiimote except for the short-lived party games. I could see myself playing Rabbids once or twice on my own, and then trying to bribe my friends to come round to play it with me. Same with Wario, the upcoming SSBB etc.

Nothing entices me about the console at the moment - Excite Truck? meh. Zelda? rpg's just don't do it for me anymore. VC? If I want to play old games, I'll play them on some sort of emulator, the long lasting appeal of VC beyond "ooh, I used to play this game when I was 3" is lost on me.

I just can't see what the Wii is offering me. This will be the first console since the PS1 that I won't be buying and I can't see that I'll be missing out on anything. Perhaps I'm *gasp* maturing! Or maybe I'm talking out my hoop. I know it's still early days for the Wii, but I just can't see what they're going to do to entice me to part with my cash...

You're missing out on a totally different gaming experience.

Try and have a go on a friends Wii if you can.

Honestly, apart from Zelda, which im not even crazy about, theres feckall good titles.

If I was you I'd try out a friends, and wait a few months til the game selection is better

I can see there being a hell of a lot more releases now that they've sold over 5million consoles

The motion sensing is great. Yes, its a gimmick in some way, but a positive one. It helps people overcome their fear of not being able to play with a controller with buttons

I'm shocked the amount of women who are gettin them, but also delighted, cos many women miss out, thinkin its a guys thing, and it will open a whole new door into gaming for girls

    Zelda is not an RPG.

    ^ what he said.

But seriously, the Wii isn't for everybody, or to be more correct, the Wii right now isn't for everyone. some people look at it and see a gimmick or that the games aren't 'adult' enough for them, or whatever.

As people said, try and get a few good sessions on a friends Wii, and if that doesn't convince you, come back to it after a while and the range of games has been expanded. Maybe it'll be for you then.

Theres no golden rule that says you have to buy a console within it's first few months of being on the market. Nintendo aren't going to send a legion of rotund plumbers to your house to break your gaming thumbs if you try and buy one later on.

Also, why are you telling the Nintendo board that you aren't buying a Wii? Seems a bit odd to me.

Perhaps the OP wishes us to try and convince him to get one.

Either that or ignite a flame war...I'm going to bed :)

Have played a friends wii a couple of times.

Got agree the motion sensor comes across as a bit of a gimmick. Enjoyed bowling on the console but that was about it. Played warioware... meh. Played Zelda for a bit, didn't really like it but I was in the middle of somebody elses game. Guess it's something you have to get into from the beginning.

To be honest the best thing I found about the console was being able to watch youtube on the tv.

Heheh, yeah, something like that. I have a feeling that I'm missing out on an awesome "gaming experience" and that Wii owners would be able to convince me that I'm a dumbass if I don't covet the machine. :D

    WWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!:D

SSX Blur out today. Wii exclusive, reviewing well, and certainly uses the control scheme as you would want it to. I can't wait to pick it up later!

Also, a game like Red Steel, while not great itself, shows the potential of the Wii for FPS titles imo. Also, WiiSports shows what could potentially be done with Tennis and Golf titles. I'll be interested to see how Tiger Woods plays, and i can't help but think a proper tennis title could be amazing, using the nunchuck to control the players movements, and the WiiMote as the raquet - could be fantastic.

Tiger Woods Golf will be out shortly, and the Wii Version of Madden is meant to be great. Two titles that would really showcase the potential of the wii in sports games.

Couple of people mentioned Zelda, myself i've never been a fan of Zelda, but i got it for the Wii cos it was the biggest game out, and i have to admit that when you start to play from the beginning it sucks you in, i really like it now, so much i'm considering getting Ocarina of Time!

Tiger Woods is due out today, isn't it? or was the date pushed back?

i have a wii and tbh im pretty bored with it now, even my 9 yr old son dont realy bother with it anymore, i will give it a chance though with tigerwoods, ive enjoyed the tigerwoods series on ps2 so if the wii disapoints im afraid it will be the last game i buy for it:( . as most people said though its not for everyone so id recommend trying before buying.

My Wii has been neglected over the last few weeks, nothing of real interest being released for it.

However after reading this thread if SSX Blur and Tiger Woods are being released today then all of a sudden my interest is high again.:)

    Gimmick???

People said the second screen on the DS was a Gimmick....

... I think after less than a year, metroid prime, cooking mama, Hotel Dusk to name a few!

its safe to assume that its here to stay!

I think the OP has a partial point though. SSX Blur is the only game since launch that I actually want and I'm looking forward to picking that up. Excite truck looked ok but I'll probably only get that when it is going cheap second hand.

By no means are you wrong to not covet the machine :p

Obviously you have been considering getting one, what with the himming and hawing, but maybe it's just not the right time yet. Though I think it's not quite a games shortage, there is a dirth of quality games out there at the moment. A lot of the good ones are party games, which really won't live up to their full potential if played in single player (e.g. Rayman or Warioware).

However as a few people have mentioned already, we have SSX Blur and Tiger Woods on the horizon, Super Paper Mario in the next few months, Trauma Centre in July; all with the potential to be, primarily, great single player games. I'm not trying to tell you that "Oh, these games will make you want a Wii", they may not interest you and that's fine.

It may take the guts of a year for many truly brilliant games to come out on the Wii that would make people want to buy it, it's a case of finding the right time for you. Keep an eye on things, try have a go every now and then if your friends have one and bide your time. Some of us bought at launch, that was what we thought was right for us, some people will buy it when Brawl or Metroid come out and some won't buy it at all. There's no need to justify which category you might fall into, your own choice is what's most important.

p.s. My apologies that my post form last night was not very helpful, I was tired

To me the Wii is the word "meh" in corporal form!

I bought it at launch, knowing that it was gimmicky, but I was bored and thought why not.
I bought the 360 at launch too, but with a hell of a lot less apathy!;)

After I finished Zelda in my first week, I barely touched it for months!
Literally months! I think it got played once in that time frame, for a game of Wii Sports with some friends.

I've bought plenty of games, Wii Play, Super Monkey Ball, Zelda, Red Steel, Sonic, and Wii Sports obviously. With the exception of Zelda and sports, none of them got more than 5 hours game play (although I have hopes for Sonic).

Tiger woods really had me interested, untill I heard about the wonky swing mechanics, and SSX Blur might peak my interest, but the fact of the matter is, over the course of their lifetimes, I'm going to end up buying 3 or 4 times the amount of Games for my 360, because there are so many better titles and while Nintendo have gone all out, MS have just done the basics well.
I've never been a mark for a console since my beloved Sega bucked the kicket, but the 360 has impressed my allot. I've often spent free days parked in front of the 360 for hours and hours on end, while the Wii is a half-hour at a time kinda console.

This is just my opinion obviously, but I'm not the only one who feels this way.
When my friends come round, we might mess around on Wii Sports for half an hour, but it's never long before the 360 takes over for a few hours of GOW/R6/PES6/Smackdown/FNR3/ etc!

I was one of the people who spent all christmas tryin to get a wii coz i didnt pre-order, i spent ages refreshing that argos site hoping i cud reserve one but never cud. About 2 weeks into January I started to go off the idea of the wii as there was nothing really out on it apart from Zelda that I wanted. Now its mid March and I looked at the shelves today in the gameshops and there is still absolutely nothing that I want on the wii apart from Zelda and I get the feeling that its gonna stay that way for quite some time, at this stage ive lost total interest in the wii. There are so many good games out on the 360 and the ps3 is launching with what looks to be a library already bigger than the wii's current back catelogue.

To be honest, thats a silly attitude. If the games don't interest you, then how can you say that every game from now on won't either?
To the OP : The wii isn't for everyone, if ya don't like the idea of it then don't get one. As for the controller being a gimmick, isn't a computer game a gimmick in the first place? It's gimmicks that keep us entertained. Saying that the wii controller is a gimmick and that I'll buy a PS3 instead is kind of silly cause the PS3 has what is only a failed attempt at a Wii controller. And Sony have yet to give us a good controller anyway.
Buy a 360 and a couple of good games and away ya go. But it's my feeling that the 360 will be the last console without some kind of motion sensing controller. They're here to stay.

Not a fair comparison all the xbox games you have mentioned came out at least a year after launch.

Give the Wii another 6-10 months and see what is around then. You might find the ratio has changed.
