very disappointing that the only people they got to debate this were all doctors......bar the patient representative. Are there no other professions that might have a view on the structure of the Irish health service? Or is no other profession important?
Many patients in mental health 'run out' of VHI and are turfed out of the private sector and back into the public sector.

Sure, aren't we only "Allied Health Professions". We couldn't possibly have an independent opinion that would be considered more valid than the prevailing bio-medical model of healthcare that still seems to be so all-pervading when it comes to policy making and decisions at strategic level.

Interestingly, in the Northern Ireland document from a couple of years ago "Investing for health", which is the most progressive health policy document I have ever read, they have banned the use of the term "Allied Health Professional" and replaced it with the term "Health Professional", as the original term was determined to be much too bio/medico-centric. One only needs to look at the ads the HSE runs every week under the heading "Allied Health Professionals" to see how they conceive of healthcare delivery in the Republic....

In addition, in rolling out primary healthcare in the North, they went ahead and did it without the inclusion of the GPs, as they couldn't get agreement with the GPs. The result is the above mentioned document, which defines health and healthcare in a way that doesn't just pay lip-service to the psychosocial model. Now there's a radical concept...

If anyine wants to look at the document "Investing for Health", you can find it in pdf format here. Its a bit long but well worth a look. Maybe this is the direction we should be looking towards:)
